Found this on a different forum. I know it's a repost, it was posted years ago but I sure as heck haven't seen it before and I know at least some people here will enjoy it. SO, enjoy.

Actually in the person's defenese most tire companies will tell you to put traction on the front of the car regardless if it's RWD because the front of the car is heavier due to the engine.

that setup makes sense....if it was on the rear the car would just move forward and won't turn cause no traction up front. but if you move slowly with no chains in the rear you'll move and can turn.

http://www.ehow.com/how_5235_install-tire-chains.html

STEP 1: Determine whether your car is front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive. Tire chains always go on the driving wheels.

Please point me to the states that won't allow you to drive WITHOUT chains. They're damaging to the road, and usually maintainence/emergency vehicles are the only ones allowed to use them.

if you drive up to yosemite natl park and you get snowed in, they won't let you drive back down with out chains unless u have awd and snow tires. same for big bear mtn. i live in socal and the only place it snows are on the mountains and i always carry chains when i go snowboarding just in case.
