Default Amateur photography, be gentle...(56k..byebye)

Our class is finally learning photography and it's pretty fun. Our teacher gave each of us an Canon PowerShot A610 digital camera and told us to go out and take some pictures. As the title stats, this is my first time, so don't be to harsh.

Pretty good, some of the photos the point of focus was a little too far toward the edge for me. For example the pic of the leaves and the one by the creek.

good job. Keep working hard. I have taking photos since 1970. I am still learning. I think that many of us are eye catchers in one way or another.

I like the spider web shot. Like others have said keep practicing. I took photo 1&2 in HS but we only did B&W. Only wish digital SLR was around then.

when taking macro shots like the ones above, look for objects that have a consistent pattern to keep the eyes locked on the main focal point. When you have objects in the background that stand out, the eyes tend to stray away from the main focal point. The problem with point and shoot cameras is that they tend to keep everything in focus except when shooting in macro mode, so you aren't able to separate your focal point from the background. Once you start shooting with SLRs, you'll have more control of your depth of field and other things. The only one that caught my eye was this shot:

If you crop it differently by eliminating the sky and tweaking the levels slightly, you can give the image a little more impact.

nice tries but without a macro lens allot of those shots are not going to come out properly. try taking shots from further from the subjects.

That pic with that red/orange bug....i hate those things. I had like an infestation of them on my car. I couldnt figure out what they were. They looked crazy, had spikes all over them. Then i finally found it online and low and behold...it was a baby ladybug. Anoying little critters.

OP is using a point & shoot camera so what you're suggesting won't work. yeah, with an SLR, you can use a longer lens to create more distance from the subject for more background blur, but on a point & shoot camera, the aperture gets smaller as the focal length increases.
