Default Trying out rolling shots... 68 pics to get these two.

Local Z club had a "Rolling Photoshoot" cruise that I volunteered to shoot... here's my car:

Ended up using one of the other club member's Nikon, as my poor Canon ran out of CF card space. Next time, I will remember to bring extra cards and a fully charged laptop to the shoot.

We took 424 photos in all.

Why so many shots to get these 2? Why is the EXIF data blocked? What mode were you shooting in?

I don't know why the EXIF is blocked... probably due to rudimentary editing tools (picasa, you get what you pay for I guess). Shutter priority, 1/30, we were rolling at 30mph.

His Nikon had IS, but was still a pain to get blur free shots at that slow of a shutter speed. I have one other that is acceptable, but it's similar to the last one and comp was worse.

Ah, yes, the inevitable "slam it" comments ha ha. Still waiting on my Prolines, getting a killer deal but I have to wait for them to come off another car. Patience, I keep telling myself, patience.

In the meantime, I can still take most speedbumps without becoming a traffic obstruction.

What lens? Faster lens makes rolling shots much easier

haha wierd.. we had a little rolling shots BBQ meet last weekend too..

You could try doing it on the highway at highway speeds.. that way you can set your shutter a little faster... Shoot in RAW.. the ones that have exposure problems can probbaly be saved if you do..

try burst mode where you reel off like 5 at a time ..

and one of my friends told me to try resting you camera on your door when you shoot.. something I never though of lolz.. Of course it's *MUCH* easier to take these pictures when you are a passenger.

^^^+1 to everything he said. try shooting between 1/60-1/100, depending on your speed/focal length.

6.5fps on the 40d FTW!

Why not just use a pole and some suction cups? You can get some great results. Plus you dont have to take a massive amount of pictures.

Heres what you can do with 5 minutes for the shot, but like 30 in PS to clean everything up.

PM ninj4 mod3 for tips, he does all of our shoots in the NW section.

Because there's a different between rig shots and rolling shots? I like both.

Yeah, good question... He had a Tamron (??) that zoomed to somewhere around 250mm, not entirely sure what aperture.

We had access to a road that was basically deserted... it's brand new, and only partially built on the outskirts of town, it is kind of a road to nowhere. Speed limit was only 35, but after evaluating all the shots, I agree that we should have bumped up the speed to 60.

We had access to a buick with boat-like suspension, so I sloshed around in the back shooting while my wife took the helm.

I did try resting camera on door, but bumps still transmitted too much vibration at low of a speed, and any time I used that technique the pics came out way worse.

p.s. your car is the standard that I build mine to

I am planning on building a rig in the near future! I can't wait to try out that technique!

oh god i hope he didn't zoom it to 250mm unless you were a mile away .. you need a wide angle lens to get the best rolling shots.. On a cropped sensor camera I'd say anywhere from 10-17mm.. then just have the car pace you in the next lane.. It's really simple..

My friend set up the camera (Tv mode, 1/80 shutter) for his GF to take pics of my bimmer last weekend.. His GF knows *nothing* about photography except aim and click shutter.. We were going about 65-70mph

I'd say 80% of the photos were keepers and incredible sharp stuff like this came out lolz:

We had taken so many rolling shots together through the years that we know exactly what to do with the car.. what speed to go, how to pace, when to speed up, avoiding other cars and getting all the good angles..

it will come with practice..
