Well I'm not in Houston, but thanks for the idea. We might have to do this in DFW soon.

My CHL came in the mail this past Saturday so it's time to buy my carry gun. I currently own a Taurus PT92 9mm, but I don't want to carry something that big. I've fired a few guns, but not many. I got my license so it's time to buckle down on the shopping.

What do you guys like to carry? I've been thinking about the Springfield XD sub-compact 3" .40 or maybe the Smith & Wesson M&P compact .40.

I just saw the new Springfield XDm 3.8 on their website. I'll have to check the local shops and gun show for it.

I carry my G23 (.40cal) OWB (outside the waistband) and my G36 (.45acp) IWB. I think you having a handgun meet will help you out.

Either my Glock 26(9mm) or Kahr PM9(9mm). The Kahr is about as small and slim as they come in a 9mm. It's a single stack 6 shot. So small you can slip it in your front pocket and not even notice...

The G36 is also a 6+1 but in a .45acp. Also since its a slim frame it's smaller than the G26. I'd like to try the G26 but think my next subcompact Glock will be the G27 (.40cal).

Werd. I can double tap better with the 9 vs. the 45acp, compact size. Ammo for the 45 is much more exensive too. 10 shot clip on the 26 also.

Ever try those pinky extension for the clip? It makes a BIG difference...

Thanks for the info on what you guys carry. There's a gun show here next weekend (19-20) so I'll be there.

Hey VO,

How do you like the Kahr PM9. It seems like it would be perfect for IWB or in a pocket like you mentioned. The Taurus PT709 "Slim" is one I looked at first, but I would imagine the Kahr would be a better gun. I love my current Taurus, but I'm not trying to stick to a particular brand. The Kahr guns are quite a bit higher in price.

The G36 doesn't need the extension. And ammo might be cheaper for a 9mm but I only need one .45auto to stop someone vs a couple 9mm.

It's not bad. A little hard to grip once your hands start to sweat, because the grip is so slim. The recoil isn't too bad, but not as easy to double tap as the Glock 26. One major gripe I have is the tensiof the magazine springs. Even though I've put many rounds through it, the springs are so tight that you can't put the last round in the magazine, without it jamming while chambering the 1st round. I wanna say it's a 7 round single stack, but you can only load 6 rounds, and still chamber a round efficiently. If you load the 7th round in, you have to manually nudge on the back of the slide to make the round chamber properly. Another thing I've noticed is that hollow points don't seem to chamber smoothly either. On a same note, it could be I haven't broken it in quite yet. I've put about 400 rounds through it. Maybe it needs more...

I would like to join, but won't be able to make it this time. :-(

I have the Taurus PT 1911 .45 and used to carry the Walther PPK/S .380. I sold my Walther, so I'm looking for something small to carry.

I would like to ask you guys one question. My CHL will be expired next month. so it's time to renew. Do I have to renew before it's expired?

Thanks.

It would be best to take the class before yours expires, theres a grace period after it expires that you have to renew, but it's not too long. Once it goes past that grace period you have to take the new class all over again and pay the beginner fee all over again. Renewing is pretty cheap comparatively.

And isn't there also an extra fee for letting it expire?

there's not an extra fee till you have to retake the first course...and then it's just the cost of the first course...renewal classes are cheaper
