Question Suggestions for a good alarm w/ remote start

anybody have any suggestions for a good car alarm w/ remote start? retailers in the hampton roads (VA, 757) area? installers? i have an automatic so it shouldn't be a problem. I'm actually debating on if i should even get the alarm portion of the whole thing...i could keep the stock one and just get remote start. what do you guys think?

I have a Viper 790XV which has remote start.

I did NOT have them install the remote start. To get it to work, since the key has a chip in it, you have to either hide a key near the ignition or get a programable module to send the chip signal, thus disableing this security feature.

It seemed a little silly to me to remove a security feature to add an alarm.

But anyway, the alarm has been good (can't say how good the remote start is).

I got the Avital 4400, almost identical to the Viper 791xv without the "name" prestige. it's been great so far, i just want to know how to mod the remote so it has a larger reception radius.

When that feature is wired in, the key is not active all the time. The only time that key is Active is when the alarm is being triggered for remote start.
Otherwise, you will still need a chipped key to start your car.

i heard that remote starts wear down the starter faster by over turning the ignition (hold down the ignition longer than the normal)...is this true? it's just what i heard....i really do want remote start though. what's the verdict? does anybody have remote start here or knows much about it?

Also a myth. Remote starts electronically trigger the starter the same way you would when you turn the key. If the starter continued to turn the "key" in a sense, then you would get starter grind. Which all remote starts have an anti grind feature to make sure your starter is safe.

it's a guy that does them in his garage, but he's certified so i could care less. plus he charges less. for the Viper 791xv he charges 450 for the base alarm and 30 for the bypass if you have a manual Z. my alarm, which is also a DEI product, was 350 for just the base, which includes autostart, shock sensor and a base alarm, plus 30 for the bypass...so it was 380 installed. lemme know if you're interested and i'll PM you his #.

are you saying the Viper is $450 for the install AND actual alarm? And by bypass, you mean the autostart? (thanks for the reply)

yeah, it's 450 installed. the bypass is the clutch bypass for manual cars so that you don't need to have the clutch depressed for the car to start (yes for autostarts) no problem man. he does good work, haven't had a problem at all. if you know a place to get alarms for cheaper, you can bring it to him and he'll install it.

$250 = rip off, my guy can get it for $220 wholesale cost, he only makes a profit from the install. (This is the same guy that did Philude's alarm) If you get the Avital alarm (SAME Mechanical Parts, the ONLY differance is the alarm name and the remote... trust me, I've seen both side by side, they're from the same makers too, DEI) if you get this alarm, it's $100 cheaper. Avital sells it for like $130, considering you have a automatic, it'll be about $410 installed WITH the alarm installed. And if you want your windows tinted, he'll do it for $100 extra. PM me or Philude for details.

well, appreciate the info, but already paypal'd the guy. seemed decent enough....

but Philude's guy quoted me $550 installed for the Viper (total)....or $150 if I bring the alarm to him. So $150+$250 is $400, which doesn't seem so bad.

I guess live and learn....

250 is not a ripoff , and 220 is not wholesale cost. The bypass is also for your chipped key (5550u module) to bypass the clutch you only have to cut a wire.

Just moving through

400 installed for that alarm is a VERY good price!!! Alarms first of all are labor intensive and second of all if it is a Viper product , should only be installed by a certified viper retailer. So most people won't even install the alarm if you got it from another source.

400 is a very good price...i had a friend who did mine for 350 but luckly he had one of his employees to do all his dirty work...it took them nearly 8 hours to complete gettin everything done correctly and neatly. So for all that work they do they deserve that extra couple bux.

are you getting the Viper 791 for 250?

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/viewitem.php?id=1590

this place has it for $199. i was gonna get it from there and have the guy install it, but decided on the cheaper one since DEI makes both anyways.
