Brent should ... LOL.
I think you prolly had your block begging for mercy before it even went FI
It seems that all the FI setups in the Mid-A are far beyond what the manufactures designed the systems for. Let alone what Nissan designed the VQ for. Given that we're pushing the envelope farther than most, we can only expect to have issues at some point. (Makes me nervous...)
Brent - it's sad that she went, but it had to happen at some point. Like everyone's pointed out: at least you have a back up motor waiting for you. Given the level of support mods that you've already put into the car, I'm sure it'll be a monster when she's back on the road. Also, it's going to be a pretty sight when you've got it lined up next to the Lotus

Brent, sorry to hear, but the way your car swallows cash, it wont be long before she is back on the street.

I guess I should not be surprised Berto already knew about this, but I only told a few people, so I am a bit surprised more people already new about this.
First until we get the engine out we won’t know what happened or how much damage was done. I would be very surprised to see the block cracked or any major damage like that, but who knows.. On the drive up to PA, I noticed the louder then normal exhaust note and when we had a chance to look at it we sort of knew the headgasket was going and ultimately that would lead to the engines downfall. BUT knowing I had another engine waiting and not wanting to miss the rally I took the car anyway.
If I had not been on such a long trip, I would have taken the car back to AAM and had the gasket fixed, thereby most likely not causing any serious or permanent damage to the engine.
Not only did I not get the problem fixed, but we continually beat the hell out of the engine for 1000+ miles cross-country before she died. To me that represents a pretty strong motor. She was blowing white smoke every time I shifted under acceleration and yet ran fine. I watched my EGTs and my boost pressure regularly and never noticed any fluctuations over my normal baseline during the long drive.
I by no means neglected my car. Anyone who knows me, knows I take very good care of my car (inside & out). The only reason this occurred was because I had been planning this event for months, initially with my built motor. In Pittsburgh I figured I had 2 choices, either stop and miss the race or continue as far as I could before the motor either gave out or I got it to LA, where I knew a shop like GT Motorsports could fix her up for me in a few days. I chose the latter and unfortunately the engine was pushed a little too hard at altitude and just could not take the pressure any longer.
As for the octane booster, I spoke to a # of people and the consensus is that each bottle only increases a tank of gas by .1 - .3 octane. So I would’ve needed a few cases to get across country and added about 5- 10 bottles per fillup to increase the 89 -> 93. We had a # of car boosting on the trip back using 89 – 91 octane and none of those blew, but of course these were STI’s, 944’s, and an EVO.
Anyway, my other motor is just about complete and hopefully will be in by the end of this month…. BUT WE ALL KNOW HOW THAT GOES…
Thanks for your words of confidence and she will be back up and better then ever soon enough.

I have the F-Con Pro, and if we had time, I should have had a 91 map setting with lower boost too. Hindsight is always better then foresight...

I was given a donor engine by AAM to start my build. So the old block and crank has to go back to them. As for the other internals. We will have to wait and see what they look like once the old engine is apart to decide if they are worth salvaging.
