Relocating to DC, where should I live?
lol. Reading evryone's answer is hilarious.
Ok here's the Situation.
JOB: Surgical Equipment Salesman
Location: My Territory is the entire DC Area. I would like to be close (no more than 20 mins) from the biggest hospital or hospitals.
Martial Status: Engaged and she's coming with me. No kids.
Nightlife: Semi-Important. I like to go out to dinner at least twice a week. Movie theatre close by is a must. And Clubs every once in a while.
Budget: 2K +/- . I like the lofts I've seen on the net.
Traffic Tolerance: 50%. I communted regularly in Miami. I think Miami has the worst drivers in the world My usual drive home from work was about 30-40 mins and that was 18 miles from home.

Sure, it's expensive, traffic sucks, the cops are overzealous, and the humidity is overwhelming, but such are the flip side to any coin. Having grown up there and spending most of my life there, there are a lot of places in the DC area that would spoil the experience - I'd argue that living in MD is probably the number one culprit of that.

I lived in DC for 3 months during my rotation through Walter Reed and I loved it. DC has an awesome public transportation system and lots of stuff to do. I'm excited. Let's hope I pass the final interview!
Good luck with interview. Based on your job, I would check out anywhere along Rt 50 in Fairfax, or in Ashburn.
I believe they're building a new (another) hospital in Loudoun county somewhere. Ashburn is located in Loudoun, 5 minutes from Fairfax county.
I would probably recommend renting at first to get the feel of the area, but there are some great deals if you buy.

I'll be starting out in a small studio for the first 3 months till I find a rythm. From there I'll make a desicion. I really like the lofts in an arear called Adams Morgan. Or something like that. I hope to meet up with fellow Z drivers when I get over there.
I assume you're looking to rent at first correct? Unless you're going to get a roommate, it's nearly impossible to find a short-term lease here.
I'm a big advocate of Arlington as it's centrally located and once you get the lay of the land, you are able to avoid most traffic. Plus it'll put you in a central location for your major hospitals (20 minutes to the west for INOVA Fairfax, 15 minutes to Georgetown, GW, and Sibley, and about 30 min to Children's, DC Hospital Center (or whatever it's called), Howard, and the Veteran's Administration.
Living in DC is going to limit your options for parking, and unless you're going to retain your Florida residency, prepare for the 2nd highest income tax in the country (8.7%). If you plan on retaining your FL residency, be sure you have your car in a parking garage b/c the DC police will start leaving you friendly $100 "register your car or we'll impound it" reminders. I can't stand Maryland to be honest - but if I was forced to live there it would be Bethesda.
I've been closely watching the real estate market in the DC area for many years, and while I may be more conservative, I'd wait a little more for the market to continue to soften. There are a TON of condos in the final stages of development and the market is getting flooded. That with the combination of sub-prime loan market and banks beginning to reign in their investments, sellers are finally going to be forced to accept more reasonable priced markets...

Ok, how do I stay a resident of Florida, working in DC? I'm new to this whole move thing.
I see there is alot of condos that are finishing up. Maybe I will get one at a reasonable price. Maryland does sound like a wise choice though. I need at 3 least places to park. I have my Z, my work truck, and my GF's car. We like condos but would settle for a nice townhouse if anything. What is the income Tax bracket in Maryland? I'm looking for something that can put me 20 mins from central DC.

Unless you live near a Metro Station I would not recommend commuting in to DC from MD ..........TERRIBLE! I used to live in Falls Church VA which is 20 min from DC, lived about 2.5 miles from 495 which takes you all around DC and it would sometimes take me an hour and half to get to work in Germantown, MD!! Traffic around here is nuts, I recommend finding something near the Metro Stations

ok, my first interview went well. It was a Gallup phone interview. I'm one step closer. Probably next week I'll meet up with big bosses and get my formal interview. It's pretty much in the bag, from what my buddy says.

Compaired to MIAMI, DC is very comparable with MIAMI being more on the expensive side, but the traffic is comparable too. Maybe because I only go to MIAMI for major events...traffic sucks there too....I think traffic is everywhere now a days...even BFE has stop lights now...lol.

It all really depends on what you are looking for and your price range -- I am in Real Estate in the DC metro area, so if you need help finding a place, please PM me and we'll see what we can find. Good luck, its a great area to live.
Ummm hellllooooo... move to the Federal Hill area downtown Baltimore MD you will be within minutes of Hopkins, Union Memorial, shock trauma, and many others. Also maybe 30-45min to DC 30-45min to Belair and Havre De Grace... More Large Hospitals...
No brainer buy an EZpass and your all set; so much potential (if you can cover MD as well
)
Also Fallston and Bel Air MD have nice size houses and property available, near by golf and country clubs. Pricing way less than the VA area, lower cost of living. Not overcrowded and less Police to harass enthusiasts (20mph over isn't reckless driving, no jail time
) oh yea... maybe an hour drive to DC in medium traffic.
Baltimore County and Harford county school systems are both pretty good

The place we bought our condo (which is for sale, moving to Richmond) is called Savoy Park. If I could do it again, I would like in this zip 22041 because everywhere leaving here is against traffic for the most part. I get to DC in like 15 minutes (I leave at 630)....takes about 45-60 if I leave after 730-900am.....good luck. Shoot me a PM if you would like a local guide of whats good or bad places to live.
