So please, go to SEMA and watch how the by-pass valve works.

just my two cents.
i have the injen CAI version that can convert from a CAI to a short ram. i ran it as a CAI setup for a about a year and a half then converted to the short ram setup. one thing i can say from the experience is that the CAI does sound cool. but it leaves me to wonder if the sound of the CAI on the Z is simply the engine struggling to suck in the air; i.e. the sound of the air navigating the bends on the tubing.
i also wonder if what people feel as an increase in power is perhaps the increased vibration caused by the placement of the tubing and increased air turbulence from the bends? i know the Injen CAI tubing in particular bends right through the original stock air inlet and down into the bumper just behind the grille. this creates a path that is almost double the length of the stock setup or any short ram. not including the almost 90 degree downward bend to make it to the location behind the grille.

I had a nismo CAI and it sounded good but I switched to a Stillen one. It;s pretty much the same as the JWT popcharger except that the popcharger has a heat shield and the stillen had a whole box. It looks more like a stock system.
