Most people who work for a federal department make enough money to owe taxes GS-1 thru GS-4 likely not. Rest rest of us owe. Some over pay their bill and get change back, others underpay it in advance and write the check at the end of the year ... but owing is just the same.
I have my two largest W2's and I've paid more than a 2008 Track Edition worth of taxes so far ... and still have one more W2 to add to the count. Have a look at your leave and earning statement and see what you pay in taxes and Medicare.

For a future reference, it is financially wiser to owe taxes or break even than it is to receive a refund.
The last thing you want to do, is to lend uncle Sam your money interest free throughout the year.
And if you are really wise, you can avoid paying taxes altogether.
I'm humbled by what many members of this very forum have pay in taxes.
That being said, here is my list of taxes as a reference point:
- Federal Tax
- Social Security Tax
- Medicare Tax
- California State Income Tax
- California SUI/SDI Tax
- Property Tax
Not including any Capital Gains tax, Disqualifying Dispositions, Imputed Income, etc...

Not sure what my tax landscape is looking like this year: I was a student for the first 8 months of the year, but also worked since June making decent money. Guess we will see in a few weeks! But yeah, nothing beat the tax returns as a college student
