If he was going to send you in for an inspection, he seems to be admitting that his inspection isn't adequate. Why did he inspect then? Sounds a bit like harassment.

can't say i have ever had a cop do a complete inspection while on the side of the road. the inspection or repair order that was given is standard for any non-standard equipment or in some cases a light bulb out. it needs to be i believe signed off by the MVA after the correction, or signed off by a maryland state inspector after the correction. people bring those things in to me all the time for lights out and we have to sign them.

I ride with no tint so a m-fer notice me!

Thats crazy man, sorry to hear. I got pulled over one night because the cop thought my plate lights were blue... They are white BTW but I guess the reflection made it look blue. He ended up doing a walk around and even got under the car to smell for test pipes or something. Glad I don't have any....

hopefully having SC plates on the car will deter them from trying to yank me for my 15%. And then finding some of my other goodies.

In regards to the tint law in MD;

35% is the legal limit in MD, however, Federal regulations requires a minimum of 70% light transmittance in glass from the factory. When adding 35% film to the 70% glass, the over all light transmittance becomes less then 35% and therefore illegal. 50% film can be used on glass that is already 70% to stay within the 35% limit.

edit - Taken from the MVA's website; http://www.marylandmva.com/Resources...StationApp.pdf page 21.

You didn't get picked on, you were "profiled". The "asian male" would've set me off from the get go. If you go to court, I'd be sure to mention that to the judge.

I have reviewed the material on the MVA website and the PDF Charles linked to. The whole thing was nicely set up by the trooper. The regulation state that final tint level must be 35%. The film therefore needs to be 50%.

So who is right when he asked me what the tint level was and I answered 35%?! The trooper replied with 50% so he could find probable cause to cite me.

http://www.marylandmva.com/AboutMVA/INFO/58000-04T.htm

From the link above -
"I noticed that window tinting could be a reason for issuing an SERO. How can I tell if my window tint is legal?

On passenger cars, convertibles, and station wagons:

* All windows with aftermarket (added) tint must have at least 35% light transmittance.
* Red, yellow, amber, and reflective window tint is prohibited."

It is my bad luck. 0730 on a heavily overcast day is not good when you have tint.

Can't really go to court on a repair order. Was it Frederick County or Maryland State Police?

I'm confused about this repair order vs inspection order stuff. can someone explain it to me? I had mine checked by Winners Window Tint with a meter in Frederick and JT said it is legal (barely) with 35% added tint. If you got a repair order, is there a way to get someone professional check it and certify it and be on your way????

Since when is the "hand test" legit? LOL They're supposed to use a light meter. Hell, in Florida, the trooper made me "score" all of my windows with a razor before he left...hahaha

It is Maryland State Police repair order.

My choices are -
  1. Go to a barracks with an Automotive Safety Enforcement Division qualified trooper for a light meter test.
  2. Strip the tint off and have any Authorized Maryland State Inspection or barracks sign and certify the repair.
As was explained to me, only police departments can sign off on a light meter test.

Btw - I drove by 3 MSP Troopers, 1 Howard CO, and 1 Anne Arundel CO cars under the same crappy light conditions today without even a second look from them. The Trooper Sgt. that stopped me was not being nice.
