Default Anyone do the NASA Hyperdrive track days at VIR or SP?

Hey,

A coworker with a 944 has been doing the NASA track days at VIR mostly and has been asking me to do an event with him. Does anyone here do these on a regular basis? I'd hate to be the only Z there.

Here is a link to their dates. link

I've done it at summit point. It was a blast and they even put in instructor in the car with you to teach you the racing lines, turn-in points and braking points. I would recommend it to anyone with the time and money to give it a try.

I def rec. this for everyone. Your driving will improve 10-fold with a professional driver correcting your technique.

I agree. And the fun you will have is priceless. You would be the surprised how well the Z holds its own against other "sports cars" on the track if you know how to drive it well.

sweet! I am thinking of doing VIR next month. They have a session on Sunday where you follow a pace car at a "spirited" speed for only $15. I may try that before I do a hyperdrive.

I'll be there for the March event instructing.

Sooo, if you need a instructor or a ride around the track a couple of times, let me know!

Oh, and do the Hyperdrive. Trust me, parade laps for $15 won't cut it.

Hmm, only problem is that if you are FI, it will put an insane amount of stress on your engine?

I agree 100%. $359 for 2 days is not bad, really. I paid $200 for a 1 day SCCA class at Summit Point. That really gives you 60 minutes behind the wheel with an instructor (three 20 minute sessions). This wil do you more good than a bolt on for your car and is a lot cheaper.

No, it's not a race. Plus VIR has very long straights, wouldn't you want to actually be able to use the twin turbo's for once?

I can hit 140 in my NA Z on the back straight.

Absolutely. Groups are broken down by experience and skill level.

On a side note: If you pay $6k for a turbo kit to make 400whp and it's not reliable on track, shouldn't you question your purchase?

Couldn't we just "hire" you for the day and run through some off the grid twisties in backwoods VA?

I'll be there Sunday. I tried to add on something for Saturday (either Hyperdrive or HPDE, but the NASA website was not cooperating).
I will also have my Z at VIR for the Tarheel BMW event Feb28/Mar1 and the Trackdaze event Mar2/3.
I would definitely recommend signing up for an HPDE if you can. More fun than you can even imagine!!!!!!!!!!

No matter how fun some back roads can be, they still don't compare to being on track. Not to mention it's a hell of alot safer being at a track with others who are aware and safe.

Do the instructors drive YOUR car?

I had some idiot tell me at the driving schools they show you the lines in your car-with the instructor driving at one point and you watching. While Im sure the instructors can handle the twisties and know the basics inside and out, I wouldnt trust anybody around a track with my car at it's power level, not gonna happen. If somebody is gonna wreck it, it will be me.

^^^I have to say I haven't heard of or seen anyone require that an instructor drive your car. That'd be quite the liability for them. I've only seen them ride along. You thinking about doing it Berto?

It's a blast.

No, you drive your own car.

I show students the line while I'm in the car with them. Also, I try to have them ride with me in one of the instructor session's.

Cool! I will plan on the March event then. Who better to have as an instructor than a fellow Z driver?

One more thing....and I have my flame suit on....I have an auto....I have an old ankle injury on my left ankle that prevents me from owning a stick.

How bad will it be for me to drive my auto around? I can already hear the insults.

Absolutely no problem!!!! There was a guy at Triangle Z's event at VIR last weekend driving a blue Z with auto - and he was fast!!!!
Also, I think you will find that people who track their cars are exceedingly friendly and welcoming. I am a novice at this stuff, but i have been so impressed how helpful people are at these events.
Look forward to meeting you!
