Exhaust ticket non-VA resident!!!
Got a speeding ticket this morning on the toll road going east from the greenway. The cop asked me what company made my exhaust (X02) because it was illegal. In DC my exhaust is legal I've been inspected and passed with flying colors. After he gave me my tickets I asked him if I lived in PA or any other state and the exhaust was legal (in that state) then I can't drive through VA with that exhaust? He said that's correct. I was floored and pissed off. What do you guys think I should do about the exhaust ticket? I'm a DC resident and have DC tags. Should I fight it or just pay the fine and call it a day? Thanks.

Next time they ask who makes your exhaust the answer is always NISMO or NISSAN!
fight it thats bs....thats like giving a ticket for window tint.
VA beach 1999
cop pulls me over in my friend new VW bettle...murdered out with limo black tint.
Reason: No license plate displayed. I explain that the car is from IL and the temp tag is in the front window...he says ok.
then he says your window tint is too dark.. I say again, in IL this is legal...he says OK.
My drunk azz friend who owns the car opens the door and dumps his ice out on the street.
cop leaves and comes back with a ticket for litering on a public road.
we fought it, cop never showed up.

deffinitly fight it! I went threw a similar situation driving threw a little town in PA called Waynesboro. I had a set of Nismo headers/stillen test pipes/and Nismo exhaust. I was pulled over for violating the local noise ordinance. Cop tries to give me a ticket for it. I even asked him how he could write me a ticket for it since its legal in WV! He gave some bullsh** answer and I told him I would see him in court after I talked to my lawyer! His doughnut eating fat *** never showed up and the judge threw it out because of this very same reason! F***ING cops! Probably was picked on in high school

ive gotten a ticket before and im a va resident. I just put the silencers in, took a pic, showed it to the judge and he let me off. That doesnt make sense to me why they did this to you though.

its illegal to change to any exhaust that is not provided by the manufacturer!
that why if you say TRD, NISMO, SRT, ect....cops cant touch you...
I have full exhaust and stock mufflers....and I have too little back pressure...
after market exhaust are pain, dont provide more HP than the set up I am running.
stock headers
stock cats
cat back exhaust
has less HP gains than
strup headers
test pipes
stillen y pipe
OEM midpipe
muffler
granted I paid more, but I got more HP out of it and no issues with the PO PO
you live and learn
Also when you buy aftermarket exhaust they state that they are for OFF ROAD use only. 99% of them say that somewhere...or not California emissions tested, or whatever.
99% of the exhaust are illegal because of emissions reason, noise, and clearane to the ground (most of us lower our cars) which is also illegal to modify the OEM suspension.
why
its has not been government tested or approved....
hence why the stillen SC and Vortech SCs (or NISMO exhaust) cost a bit more than others....they are both 50 state legal...that is if you run the out of the box kit on a stock car with NO other modifications.
hope that helps.

To the OP:
Yes you can fight it as it is an out of state law and since you dont live in the State, you do not have to abid by STATE Regulations concerning your vehicle unless that Sate has the same mandated laws. Simply put: You dont need a lawyer. You are not guilty of breaking state law because your car and drivers license are from a different state where you are legal. Since it is based on home of residence it is a waste of your time to be angry about this. VA cops are VA cops. They do **** to get under your skin so that you can be provoked into other things.

Just because a cat back exhaust isn't made by nissan doesn't mean it's illegal. If you haven't modified the cat or anything behind it (emissions reasons), it isn't too loud (noise ordinance), and doesn't hang too low (clearance), you're A-ok.
Doesn't need to be 'carb' approved, otherwise custom exhaust shops would be out of business. Only stuff that can affect emissions -- headers, cats, intakes, ect need carb approval.
