I think when I get new tires Im goign to a 255 front I am running the same sizes as you right now.
I'm not trying to be a pricked but how is 255/40/17 on a 17x8 rim needy? I'm pushing 275/40/17 on the stock 17x8 rim.
0_o post pics! I have to see that! that is the widest tire I can run without rubbing the tire on the strut....hmm 265 may work but it would be pushing it.

I'm currently running 255/35/19 on the fronts and 285/35/19 on the rears. Wheels are 19x9.5 and 19x10.5. I have about 1 or 2 centimeters of clearance between the inside rear wheels and the struts but I'm also running a true coilovers setup. Fronts are no problem.
