CDC Autocross Saturday August 21st
I just thought I would see if any of you ricers would be interested in running an autox with the Capital Driving Club in Winchester, VA on the 21ist. This is a large lot with no, I repeat no, light poles within the lot. Generally this is a 45-55 second course on this lot. Last weekend (the 7th) it was a very high speed course.....I pegged the limiter (7100rpm) in second for bit on one stretch. This is fairly atypical for this club, but expect a max speed around 50-55mph in our cars.
Turnout on this lot tends to be a bit less than some of the other lots used. It would be a good opportunity to get a few extra runs (normal is 6). The people are very friendly and are almost always willing to give ride-a-longs. There are also several instructors that will ride with you if it is your first time, etc. It's a good mix of people who have raced at the national level to first timers. There is also free water/soda and $1 hot dogs.
To register as a guest click "sign up now" and register as a "guest of member." Use 0 as the member number. You will receive an email with your reservation and car number.

You do not need to tape numbers and such on your car. They use a simple bar code system and there is instructions in the FAQ section on their home page here:

If you wish you can also ride along with me in the morning. I prefer to run solo in the afternoon, but if there are extra runs I am willing to use the first and/or second for ride alongs.
Last weekend there were about 60 cars. There was everything from 500whp 2250lb cobra replica that runs in XP (pretty much the highest class outside of open wheel cars) to a stock 2010 sentra. In total there was 8 replica cobras, 4 lotus elises, and mix mash of sti's, M3's,etc.
Here is a vid of Wade Chamberlain who runs the above mentioned cobra in XP at a national level.......the rev limiter you hear him hitting in second is about 72-73mph. Him and Fred Kelley (another FFR cobra) always have a hell of a battle for FTD. There is usually a considerable (2-3 second gap) back to the rest of the pack after them.

Cost for guests is $35. It would be best to arrive a bit early (before 8am). If you plan to attend be sure to take out ANY loose objects....this includes floor mats, anything not bolted in, and everything out of the trunk (spare, etc). Also make sure the battery is securely mounted and there are no fluid leaks.

Mike what's this MB thing? Where do I sign up? You going to come to the next ncca autocross? I guess I should start posting the ncca events as well. We need more Z's to come out. Even if they are stock we need more representation in AutoX.

Man I am booked up on autocross like crazy for the next few weeks. Mercedes is a walk up only registration.....be there at 8am. Apparently it is usually only around 50 cars. I would assume with those numbers that there will be about 8 runs, and from talking with people they tend to be done around 2:30pm. This is the first time I am going to attend one of their events.....other than that I don't know much about their club. I do know that a lot of the s2k guys run with them.
Ohhh....I found a vid of the Moran mobile for its pole qualifying run at the Cumberland All Stars vs Capital Area Cobra Club duel on Friday. This event is a serious grudge match. Anyone who runs autox in the area knows how fast the XP cobras run. This car (and driver, Mike) also took FTD on Saturday over a formula car.

The winner ended up being Brian Karwan in his 1850lb 250+whp SMF civic. He beat Fast Fred Kelley in the finals. Karwan is probably the odds on favorite to win the scca solo national championship this year.
Staged for the Final:
...and write-up of the event....

Edit: Also the margin of victory in the final was about .014 seconds. That is how competitive this duel is.

So......I guess I will be the only one tomorrow. Sunday looks like it may rain. My car does........ok......at autocross speeds in the wet, but with the alignment/shock package I have the car is **** poor on the highway when it is raining hard. Thus...I won't be attending on Sunday if rain appears imminent.

Well.....another weekend on good autox and people. It was a strong field (albeit small) on Saturday. A curve ball got thrown at the XP cobra guys that typically dominate this club. Gary H showed up in his stalker lotus kit car (1300lbs and well over 250whp), and took FTD by almost a half second over Fast Fred Kelly. I also had a co-driver this weekend.....which was interesting. Mike Moran hoped in to see what he could do with it. He is very, very fast. Same fella that drove in the above video. I was actually anxious for him to drive, and see how I stacked up against one of the best in the area. Two weeks ago he co-drove with Franklin Dam....who won the Northeast divisional a few months ago in his well prepped CSP miata. Too everyone's surprise Mike M was a full 1.5 seconds faster than Franklin. Any who....yes, I got beat in my own car lol. He ran a best of 43.39, which was about 3 seconds off FTD, and was 12th overall. My best clean run was a 44.33, but I coned away a 43.71 . In all honesty I wasn't expecting to be that close to Mike M. I was closer to cobras than I have ever been. Fast Fred came in with a 40.44 to top that group....ahead of regional SCCA XP champ Larry Casey. A newcomer, Glenn, who was fresh off whoopin' up on BMW NCC last week for FTD, was also in attendance. He managed to hold off "Smooth" Jim Harris for non-XP/M FTD in his M3. No in car video this week....forgot to grab the battery off the charger before I left.
Next week CDC is in Bowie, MD on Saturday (8/28). Much closer for some of you folks to come out and pop your autox cherry.
Results....too show the variety of cars, experience, and times:
