Good to be a contractor if:

Bad to be a contractor if:

You guys are talking about 2 different type of contractors here.

Scott is talking about an employee that works for a contracting company and gets put into a government contract. You get less money since the contracting company takes a huge cut. But less risk since you get paid regardless of being put on a contract or not. You get benefits from your company.

Anh is talking about independent contractor that works directly for the government. You get more money since there is no middle man. Very high risk due to the fact that you could be jobless for many months/years in between contracts. You don't get benefits from anybody. It's generally for people with very desired skills that could consistently find projects.

The thing is that both types of contractors are the "same" to government since the dollar amount paid out of government's pocket is the same.

Same with me when I was a contractor. It was a pretty sweet gig. That being said the same company now is no longer bidding on the contract and our contractors are waiting to see what will happen with them.

My sister worked briefly as a contractor near the end of the big tech bubble and seeing the instability [for her] is what initially pushed me towards the fed route. Even though we may experience RIFs, lower pay, etc it's rare that our pay is reduced. Although this economy pretty much changed everything for all of us [feds and contractors]. Definitely going to be pretty interesting seeing how all this plays out.

You just pointed out something important here. Generally people that go the fed route is going for the stability in exchange for lower/average pay vs people that goes for the contracting route is going for big money in exchange for high risk. So quit bitching

Sorry E10. I just feel like venting everytime I think of Congress giving themselves raises while feds, contractors and every day US citizens suffer.

I hear you though... A good friend of mine who has a phd in chemical engineering just lost his government contractor job due to sequestration. Even education isn't helping in this mess.

Well getting back to the security thing. My gf's family came to the U.S. when she was 9 and she was able to get her clearance with no problems.
Tell your family to stop dealing with shady people!!!

I feel for you all on the situation right now. I work with a lot of people dealing with the same thing. It's all being thrown up in the air, no one knows what's happening or what will happen in the end.

I need to get a front bumper license plate bracket to fit my amuse front bumper. What have you guys done with your aftermarket front bumper with a license plate? I have been driving around without one for a few years but I know my time is coming.

When I had an amuse bumper I ended up making a custom bracket from stuff in my garage.
