Im In Deep Regret I Didnt Get Stick!!!! :(
I drive in and out of Boston nearly every day with my MT, I live 7 miles from my work in Boston and it can take me anywhere from 45 mins to 1 Hr 30 Mins to get to work. I never once wished I had an auto, I manage to drive, shift, drink coffee, steer with my knee and sometimes eat all at the same time. Maybe you should get to the gym and do some leg workouts
I was stuck in a traffic jam at the parking garage yesterday. There's one narrow steep curving ramp, with a Caddy CTS trying to crawl up my butt. I really wouldn't have minded having a auto then. 5000 miles and I still have trouble balancing it at times.
But overall, stick is awesome.

wow, I know EXACTLY what you mean. I used to have a 300zx AUTO before the 350. Every person's reaction would be.... WHAT??? AN AUTOMATIC??? I hated it. I loved the car & had it for nearly 3 years. Enjoy your car!
I get a lot of that too...when I tell people my Z28 is an Auto, they always say "it would be much faster if it was a stick". If they only knew...its only a 3% difference...take this for an example:
an auto 140HP Civic vs a Manual...you will feel the difference because it has low HP
an auto 345HP Z28 vs a Stick produces the same times because it already has the power...plus newer automatic transmissions have less drive-train loss. Hell, one of the larger import auto makers pays GM a royalty fee to use thier transmission.
Nissans 350Z engine is peppy for its HP, and you shouldnt see much of a diff at the track...maybe a few tenths...
Only thing is the fun factor...sometimes I do wish i had a stick...but for racing, auto all the way. Like the old saying goes, You cant shift faster than liquid.
Get a 3800 stall and 4.10 gears, ull be happy. lol

A. Standard drivetrain loss is rouglhly 5% more on a auto tranny.
B. My friend had a C5 Auto and then traded it in for a C5 6 speed. The 6 speed was noticeably faster, especially up top.
C. Manuals are better for racing. A manual tranny with a driver who can drive, will shift quicker than a production car auto. Also, try road racing in a Auto tranny.......
Good thing my Z has a manual mode. If it didnt I wouldve regret it. Not like the older autos. You could hold the gears. I dont plan to race my Z on the track. No worries about miss shifts or grinding gears.

Shhhhh.... Im trying to make the guy feel better about the fact that his gift from his father (you are spoiled by the way) is not as perfect as he would want. Think, he will never know the joys of heel 2 toe, rev matching, or a double clutch downshift with nothing but a perfect rev match to hard acceleration. I hate autos for the notch in speed they cause when downshifting.

Er....why are you double clutching a car with synchros? There's no advantage to doing that anymore...

. As in, the automatic has no advantages over the manual at speeds over 100+ mph.

A) Depends on the transmission. 15% for M6, 18% on A4's (LS1s)
B) Probably because of the gear ratio. All C5 Autos came with a 2.73 gear, M6(rare) 3.42's. My A4 has 3.23, so it isnt much difference up top. Ive driven all 3.
C) Im talking about Drag Racing. Plus, there is still driver error in the equation. Show me a driver that can shift faster than a computer. We are talking about everyday people, not pro drivers.

-The Corvette I was speaking of had the performance ratio (3.27 IIRC) and it was still no match to the 6 speed MTX.
-If you want to see people shifting faster than auto's...look no further. I know for a fact that I can shift faster than the automatic equiped version of my car. Almost all the people I know who can drive stick can.

I don't even understand why Nissan offers an auto in their "true" sports car. I guess the same reason Porsche offers one in the 911 turbo now: to sell cars to people who will never understand what this kind of machine is about. These people buy these cars for image more than performance. Image is great and I love the look of my car, but I would have never bought an automatic performance car. To me it's a contradiction in terms. You cannot match the performace of a manual transmission. (unless you wanna drop 15,000 on an smg F1 type shifter like that in the new BMW M3's). Even then i'd still say you need to check between your legs to see if you still got a set.
