350z vs. some kind of all mixed up creation
This was a trip.
I'm heading into Newport Beach to call on an account and out of my rightside mirror I catch the glare/shine of a beefy roadster thing -- it pulls up and for all I can tell its a vintage Cobra 427 -- albeit an all aluminum shiny-*** sucker with the stainless steel side pipes and big goodyear tires, centerline wheels and everything. Driven by some older, very distinguished looking gentleman.
Me, being the competitive type, stare Mr. Thurston Howell III down, hit the accelerator, and jump 1-2 lengths in front of him. I check my right mirror, and see no sign of him. I'm thinking to myself, "Self, you shouldn't pick on the retired AARP senior gentry, its bad karma" Well...karma was about to ***** slap my smug-*** upside the head...
On my left I notice a flash of metal, and then I hear the loud rumble of something torquey-- and before I could say WTF I'm looking at the diminishing rear profile of Cobra and old bald man. Whoosh. Gonzo!
I did catch up to the guy -- in the same parking lot at the same medical building we were both heading for. Found out that he's a surgeon (I sell surgical lasers) and he gave me the low down on his ride:
A Shelby-Cobra 427 carbon-fiber Replica
with a Lexus 4L V-8 Quad Cam with Twin Turbos (he claims 500+ hp with a billion or so ft-lbs torque)
He popped open the hood -- it was one cool-looking mill.
Total weight: 2250 el-bees
A strange "Uncle Ben and his converted Rice" get-up. One of those things that make you go hmmmm....
He was a member of some cobra replica club and wanted something different than the 390 or 427 Ford V-8s that all his buddies got in their rides.
He did compliment my PPW 350z though -- "Stylish Ride, son"
Thanks pops.

The good doc emailed this pic of his engine bay

yeah, if i see an older retired looking person in a vintage muscle car, i dont ever mess with them because they almost always have some crazy engine setups and stuff like that because they have lots of time to add HP and Torque, that engine bay is beautifil...

Yeah, I agree. I guess the reason we don't see more of these setups is because 99.9% of muscle car purists consider the use of an import engine as blasphemy.
I could care less, I'm into performance and technology. My father's got a 92 lexus sc400, and I've been badgering him to sell it to me. He thinks I'm going to turn it into a"rice rocket" (his words, not mine, I understand the sensitivity towards such terminology) Little does he know that I've got a little heart transplant surgery in mind -- and I'm actively searching for a 67 Mustang Fastback that I can Frankentstein back to life.
lol -- keep me posted on whatever projects/ideas you have in mind

Whats funny it I just saw a 8.xx timeslip off a Turbo Supra.. the best part? It was putting that power down thru a GM transmission.
I guess it goes both ways..Im sure some supra owners felt betrayed when they saw that.Of course like my father always said.. One of the best setups out there would have a mix of brands (Just an example,,, Ford Rearend, Dodge Hemi powerplant, and a GM Transmission. ) Who knows how valid that is..but I know for a fact a lot of GM guys (Fbody) go with moser 9" rearends.. kinda interesting when you think about it.

There's a group of Cobra replica owners out here in Los Angeles who call themselves the "Bowtie Snakes" -- They're running Chevy 350 Ramjet Crate engines and chevy LS1s in their Cobra 289 or 427 bodies -- many are also on corvette chassis/suspension.
They're more than holding their own against the more traditional Cobras with the 351 Windsors or the 427s.
BTW -- I mentioned my idea of building a lexus-stang, and my neighbors (big time musclecar enthusiasts) told me I should be shot. I guess when I do a search for carbon fiber parts I'll need to inquire about bullet-proof body armor as well
