Default Custom IM on a VQ35DE Maxima

I know it's not a Z... but the basics apply to you guys too

There aren't many IM options for us, and the non revup Z manifold swap is a washup vs our stock manifold in "SSIM" trim... so I decided to make one in the garage.

I designed it with concepts stolen from all over the internets, including SG's testing. Big plenum volume, 3.5" elbow and intake/MAF, forcing the 70MM TB to act as a venturi and flow better than it would with equal sized piping.

Landrover MAF was used with 3.5" piping for the intake.

Pics of the whole project making it are on the maxima.org all motor forums. http://forums.maxima.org/all-motor/6...yno-gains.html

Started with hacking this up:

Ended up with this:

And the gains:

The inside of the plenum looks nicely filed down. Good work.

So are the dyno runs done back to back on the same day and dyno or different days? Also, were there any tuning involved before and/or after?

Dynos are back to back within 10 minutes of each other. I had a setup with stock gaskets that kept me from having to RTV it all back together and swap fast.

Each is tuned with my UTEC (2 separate maps, but with identical timing), but I'll readily admit that the custom IM/3.5" intake tune was not nearly as well developed. I had been fine tuning and working at that stock IM/stockMAF tune for almost a year.

Slightly decreased throttle response and tip in jerk because of the larger plenum. Otherwise, pulls great and sounds beautiful.

Can't wait to get my cams/valvesprings/rodbolts/oilpump installed, perfect the tune, and hit a track...

Other than the intake stuff, just cattman headers/Ypipe and 3" exhaust. 350z UTEC hardwired in.

Impressive gains. Seems like an improvement on the Kinetix SSV design? Hope to see it tested on a Z sometime.

The RWD manifold with spacer is basically a washup vs a regular SSIM. Judging from JayPee's SSIM dyno, this one rocks the SSIM for midrange/topend power.

The FWD Kinetix is complete junk. Mismatched ports, small plenum. I had one and promptly sold it after bad results.

Now track tested... 12.6@108 on a 1.91 60' and full weight + toolbox

Thanks. Going to be aiming for some bottom 12s by fall with lots of minor changes and proper track prep of the car.

Mainly cams + supporting mods (and a higher rev limiter to match), Vmanage to control CVTC and a solid tune, serious weight reduction, removed PS belt, some underbody aero stuff, skinnies in the rear and hopefully a high 1.7 or low 1.8 '60 foot.

3.5" intake/maf
Home made IM
NWP phenolic spacers
Cattman Headers/Y-pipe
3" catback
UTEC tuned
LW flywheel and UDP (others have shown gains of over 10wtq from these... Guess it counts)

Race weight today was just over 3400lbs because of all the extra junk in the car. It's around 3350 with just me and full interior... I'm a pretty hefty guy.

Pulling seats, bose, and a few other things... I'm thinking I can take that down to around 3200.

Well mustangs are very popular anyway, but there was some big mustang club there.

Beating that 2011 GT down the track was pretty fun... even if he sneaked a win light by .05 because of me sleeping at the light.

There was a built bottom end APS TT G35 out there, but he was on dubs and inexperienced launching... Ran him on my first run.

If this car were a Z, it would be pretty far up on that top 25 NA list on the drag forums.
