As the title states I am looking to rebuild a Motor for my Z. I take out to the auto cross track and have been thinking about doing a modest motor build over the next year and a half.

My plan was to get a VQ35DE motor and rebuild it, keeping it mostly stock but throwing in some stronger parts here and there. I do not want a crazy NA build of 300 WHP. I just want a back up motor to eventually swap mine out in the event of a problem down the road.

The Car is a 2003, I do not want to put in the VQ35HR motor (at least I don't think I want to because of how it would change my class for SCCA).

And I don't want to put a turbo or SC in it, again with the classing.

My question is this, Would it be better to look for a 2006 revup motor? or just any DE engine and tear it apart and rebuild?

What exactly is it that makes it a Revup? just the lower collector, and 7500 rpm redline? If that's the case cant a motor from a 2003 be modified to handle that?

Rev up will work fine, but you need to convert it to normal DE.mthe lower collector , cams and a few other things are different. Find what you can cheap, start building

 

I would just find a low mileage de in a junk yard and save yourself some headache...

 

well there is one in my local for sale forms for like 600$ thats a DE motor Im really thinking of giving him 500$ and just going to pick up, Strip it down, And rebuild it

 

I just don't see the point of rebuilding it is all I am saying, what to plan to gain, people don't ruin pistons, sometimes rods, but generally it is ussually bearings or rings unless you miss the crap out of a shift, but seriously just buy that motor and keep it ready to drop in if you ever pop a motor. I just think your idea is a waste of money...

I guess I am saying that if you were to do a rebuild, you would not be far off from a 11:1 compression built bottom end, it wouldn't net you 1 hp but would be strong, and would be ready for some heads with some better cams in them, or you can buy my old 350z with all the work already done and pull the motor, put that stock motor in and sell the car off again, I bet you could make a deal for $10k for my old 350z, haha

 

So basically what you are saying is Run my motor into the ground until i come across a major problem, then just fix said major problem, and continue to run it on the track...

 

Run the motor you have in it into the ground, and then put that other one in run it into the ground, I cooked the rings on piston 6, I spent about $9k doing most of the work myself to fix and build the motor and yea, I had a built proof motor, but I only gained 30hp, and it was pretty much all from the cams
