No more mustangs for me
Well thought i should introduce myself as a prowd owner of an 06 z.. i traded in my last two mustangs to get her as all ive owned for last 3 1/2 years is mustangs... ive been reading this forum since i bought the car to get ideas for modifications... i felt that if i was gonna be using the forum so much i might as well join. so wahts up guys?
Having come from nothing but Mustangs for the past 9-10 years, I think I can give some insight as to strengths and weaknesses.
Power:
The Mustang has quite a bit more down low (albeit I've only ever owned V8 Mustangs of the GT and Cobra variety). This is an obvious due to the additional cylinders and cubes. However, the Z has a very nice power band and I was surprisingly impressed with it, and it's inability to let the power fall off as the revs climb. Once it goes, it keeps going. The early 4.6 2v Mustangs had a tendency to let the power fall short of redline. In fact, with the way this car revs, I'm surprised, and a little disappointed that my Cobra out revved it, revving all the way to 7k. It feels as though the Z could spin at least that high. Just to add - I really didn't expect to chirp into 3rd gear, WITH TRACTION CONTROL ON! With it off, it was like hitting second.
Handling:
Stock, the Mustang tends to have a fair amount of body roll. We all know a Mustang's strength lies in the straights anyhow, but with the plethora of after market parts available - you can build those cars for any track you desire. The Z feels firm and confident, yet without the stiffness I had with my Mustangs that sported after market shocks/struts and springs. Truly a more livable ride. Not to say the race car ride quality isn't fun from time to time, but after 6 years worth, it wears long in the tooth.
Looks:
Having been disappointed in Fords watering down of the 2005 concept Mustang into what it is now, I feel the Z wins. Although, looks are subject to one's opinion so I'll cut this short.
Modability:
I would say that there isn't much out there than can compare with the after market for Mustang, not to mention the lower cost of modding. I was impressed with the number of mods available for the Z cars, and their effectiveness as I have read in the past that these cars didn't take well to modification.
Other miscellaneous features:
The Z is obviously packed full of gadgets and gizmos which I just love. And Nissan did a reasonable job of adding extra storage space behind the seats. There isn't much out there that can beat the exhaust note of Mustang (surprisingly enough, flowmasters make me gag). Even though, I consider the Z's exotic, mellow exhaust note the note to strive for in the import world. If the Mustangs exhaust is sexual, then this is foreplay.
