even in traffic, a manual isn't that bad at all, or maybe that's me..i've done the commuting in LA traffic, and doing the city driving in san fran now, and never have i once said i wanted an auto, even with the hills and traffic.....just seems like more people who have autos eventually want stick than vice versa....

I'm not saying one is better than the other. but in general most people who regret transmission choice wish they had gotten a manual instead of an auto. You almost never see people wishing they had gotten auto instead of manual.. my 2cents. If you even need to ask "manual or auto" get an auto and save us your whining later. Everyone here who drives a manual knew that that's what they wanted from the start.

Barring any arguments about what is "cool" or "better for performance" you have to keep the following two things in mind:

* The manual is cheaper up front, and long-term. Think replacing a clutch vs. replacing the whole auto transmission.
* If you're doing major engine mods, a manual will accept the changes easier.

Autos with paddles are great, but for a sportscar I'd rather spend money on a twin-clutch system. No torque converter and the engine is never disengaged. Rumors are Evo X's will get them and the newer M3's will have them as an option eventually.

With the 6spd manual you have more control of the Z and its more fun to drive. Unless in a traffic jam. Also with 6spm you have 6 instead of 5 gears. The stubby shifter looks cooler in 6spd M!!

Autos have less maintenance problems (probably bc they are not driven as hard) can be fun to drive in shift mode, are alot better in a traffic jam. And I'll repeat the AT5sp seems to be the most stablest transmisson of the two.

I drive a 6spd M.

Guys with an auto, what is your opinion?

Sly don't worry about what everyone else's opinion is, take a couple of manual and tiptronic's out, and judge for yourself, as you're the going to be driving your Z to be.

+1 you're the one driving it...you have to figure out what suits you.
either way, you're getting a great car

+ 100. Though personally, I would never own a performance car with a torque converter. I strongly suggest to get the manual transmission.

another person that thinks a manual transmission designates a car as being a "performance" car.
