Default New Z owner - 3rd Gear Question.

Hello Everyone!!

This topic may of been done to death but I'm new here so please be nice haha.

Picked up my first 350z on Wednesday and I'm in love!

Unfortunately I have grinds when going into 3 gear usually at high RPM and not every time, quite infrequently...at the moment anyway

At first I was devastated thinking I'd bought one with a dud gear box but after doing a bit of research it appears this is a common issue with 3rd gear synchro.

Is this something I should get looked at immediately? I'm worried that if I leave it then it could cause even more issues or get worse over time.

Those who have had and rectified this issue what did you do? lots of different forums recommend different fixes, If anyone could recommend somewhere in WA that would be awesome!

I've also got the clutch rattle when sitting in neutral, from what I've read elsewhere this isn't cause to be too alarmed, is this correct?

Cheers

Hi there. Welcome, congrats on the purchase.

The grinding even slight means your synchro is worn and needs replacing. I can't remember what year you bought but the 2003-2005 came with CD008 transmission which is know for failing gears. It seems like yours has been effected.

You can either rebuild or buy the updated CD009.

For the clutch you most likely are talking about the chatter. It could be attributed to the fact w have dual mass flywheel or worn throw out bearing. I wouldn't worry too much on this mine has been like that since day 1.

Sounds like you are in the situation I was last year. When I bought my Z in july 2013 it would grind 3rd maybe one every month. They just a few months ago it started doing it once a week. Then one morning I woke up and went to drive it and now it grinds 3rd every shift.
What is my solution? Im about to swap my trans and clutch out for the JWT stage 1 clutch/flywheel and a new CD009 trans.

Some owners are lucky and have no issues and others have it.

Mine does from 6th to 5th when it's cold out.

Welcome to the forum and i was going to congratulate you on your purchase, just a shame about the worn synchro's although I've got to say that my '04 bo runs nice and smoothly except when its cold and then the gears are a little tight but so far no problems. The above posts should sort you out though.

Aw crap :-S

Mine is only when hi revs.

Was yours the same at the start?

What has this cost you so far if you don't mind me asking.

You could probably shift a lower revs and not have a real problem for many miles. A little babying of the gearbox can go a long way toward preventing problems.

Kornercarver is correct in saying that being gentle will help extend the life.
And yes I can actually shift mine at low rpm without grinding, anything above 2500rpm and mine grinds.

And price wise, I am getting the clutch and trans from z1motorsports for a little over $2k. And installation will be done by myself and a friend that has a lift. He won't charge me but I will probably end up giving him about $300 for the help. A nissan dealer would probably want $600-700 for the install
