Default 2007-2008 VQ35HR Questions

Looking into the newer 350z models as my 1st 350z as doing a bit of research online and watching YouTube about these cars, I heard the 05-06 models were the worst for “oil consumption” and a catch can was basically NECESSARY to add. Well, I don't care to go through all that because I want a car I can drive and not have to constantly worry about an oil issue.

So that brings me to my questions about the HR motor:

1. How reliable are these motors as a daily driver? With the obvious oil changes on time and basic overall maintenance?

2. Can these motors stand up to good HP numbers with your general bolt on mods that are out there? I plan on doing full exhaust, full intake, maybe a tune to squeeze a little more power out of it....

3. Does this motor have the oil consumption issues like the 05-06 350s? Ive heard it was fixed?

Thanks for any help or info.

First off, the earlier VQ35DE engines DO NOT have oil consumption issues if properly maintained. Do more research, and you'll find the '06 revup VQ was the one that had documented oil consumption issues. If faced with a choice between a well-maintained DE or a poorly maintained HR, I'd pick the DE every time!

Also, don't expect any great gains out of bolt-on mods for the HR. Nissan did a great job with R&D on the HR (and DE) and you'll need a tune to get any negligible gains with the engine.
