I was the same way this year. Wife started making a sh!tload this year, and we still came away with getting money back. Its all about how much you can deduct and lower your taxable income by.

Yeah I made 24k
Last year it was around 12k. I always end up owing when I claim single 0.
BTW at 0 u should always get some back unless ur employer isn't takin the right amount out. Between being slightly overtaxed and ur standard deduction thats the only way i can see not getting something back.
I always get money back also. Got back around 2400 last year and a little less this year because I made less. I get most of my money back from being a student and claiming tuition.
