Headlights are gone!
I have a pair of blacked out 2008 OEM headlights that I would like to trade for a standard set of +2006+ headlights. Looking to do an even trade.
I followed the diy procedure outlined here on the my350z over a year ago and have had zero problems with these lights. I used a good amount of sealant and they have never leaked or fogged over - this is through countless car washes and a winter's worth of driving in the rain. I used a high temp black paint with a kind of metallic flake that matches very well with the OEM magnetic black, and a flat black high temp paint on the shroud directly around the projector lens (see pics).
Only reason I am looking to trade is that I am currently selling the Z, and a prospective buyer has requested a more stock look to the car; IMHO the blacked out look flows better and I would be keeping them if I wasn't selling the car.
I'd like to trade ASAP if possible, thanks for looking!

Actually I moved from Morgan Hill and just never updated my location; I am currently in Campbell. Where are you located? I need to trade these asap, so we might be able to work out meeting somewhere if possible.

I used a liquid nails high strength/hi temp adhesive and added an extra layer of clear silicone on top of that. The extra bead of sealant is noticeable on the top of the headlight housing itself (not the lens itself) when the hood is open only, but I wanted to be 100% sure these things would never leak after all of the horror stories I had heard.
For all parts except the lens shroud I used a krylon primer for added plastic adhesion (3-4 light coats) and then 3-4 coats of a metallic black krylon paint. This was followed by 2 light coats of clear. For the lens shroud I used 3-4 light primer coats followed by a matte black header paint (I was really worried about potential bubbling from the heat generated by the HID bulbs, plus I was going for a subtle accent to the rest of the housing).
You will notice that I reassembled the lights with the plastic refraction lens (piece that covers the turn signal bulb) because I didn't like the open look of the bulb without it. I feel this gives the lenses a bit of a more OEM feel.
I was very careful to keep dust out of the lenses, and I would say I was 99% successful.
I'm sure there are those that would argue that companies such as clearcorners.com, etc... produce a more polished product, but I feel these lights look very good and are being offered at a very substantial cost savings. I get compliments on the lights all the time, and I myself am very **** about my car - if they didn't look good I would have spent the money on new lights long ago.
Did you use Krylon Fusion paint to black it out? I know you said that you used high temp paint, but I've heard Krylon Fusion works best.
I have a set of 06 OEM headlights that I might be interested in trading out since I was planning on blacking out the housing on mine. Shoot me a PM with your contact and we can work it out. I live in the East Bay, but I'm always in the South Bay. I don't mind making a trip down to Morgan Hill either.
