If your tints are darker than the legal limits then yes, you can get a ticket.
Here is the Illinois law:
Windshield - Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 6 inches of the windshield.
Front Side Windows - No tint can be applied legally to this window.
Back Side Windows - Any darkness can be used.
Rear Window - Any darkness can be used.

Yes any tint on the front windows are completely illegal in Illinois. You may get away with a very light tint on the front but it varies from cop to cop. Keep in mind if you travel to Chicago the new fine for illegal tint just jumped from $25 to $250.

You can get special window tint license plates which used to be pretty easy to do but now they've made it extremely hard to get it. They've made the requirements significantly harder.
I fixed your post. You could try having window tint that complies with the statute in question. By the way, the word you are looking for is "misdemeanor". Traffic citations are usually classified as infractions and carry a monetary fine, but no incarceration.
I got pulled over for the same thing....two years ago. You can either ride it out, or take them off. And +1 on ^. They are just doing their job. When I got pulled over, the cop told me the law came about because a state cop was shot to death when coming up to a car with tinted windows. Not sure if it is true.
