We can do something as Andrew lives in North Haven. We'll come up with something. I'll let you know. BTW, FrankieZZ is looking for you.

Jeff, does Xx Tuning do alignments? Or did you go somewhere else?

Vic, unless something comes up, count me in for the 6th. I don't know if I will have the car put away for winter or not. Depends on when they start putting down sand.

On the way home from xxtuning Saturday, I was unfortunate enough to be behind a jeep that must have been offroading. When he hit a bump he dumped dirt bombs that hit my car. The bra helped but the bumper wasn't covered and I got 4 new chips.

Jeff, that back end shot was the one that really shows the height difference. Very nice.

Roger, Glad to hear you got your new A4 without event (except missing KK )

Gerald, Greg said the same thing! I'll get both of you in for a ride, don't worry. It won't be in Manhatten though, I know what those streets are like.

Halfway sounds fine, I'm up for a little drive.

Andy, XXTuning did the alignment.

Greg, Sorry to hear that you got dirt bombed. I always cringe when I see other vehicles (construction, etc.) that are dropping bombs. Also, if I can see another vehicles rear tires (usually American made SUVs) I try to maintain a more than healthy didtance even with the clear bra.

Thanks again everyone for your positive comments on my Tein install.

Doh! Victor, I meant 11/29 and 11/30. Actually though, I am off on Saturday 12/6 also, so I'm up for something in the afternoon.

The car might possibly be back by then also.

Saturday, 12/6 sounds good to me (weather permitting). Hope this is good for everyone else. Pick a place and time.

Greg, you can really notice the difference in the rear shot (hint: Look at the spoilers, it's not the slight angle that makes the difference.) The P1, P2, P3 buttons are for preprogrammed settings. Right now I have them set as follows:

P1=F0, R0
P2=F8, R8
P3=F16, R16

I'm sure this will evolve to different settings over time as I get the feel for the different levels of dampening. The alignment has already been done, but I'll probably ask them to recheck it on Tuesday when I have my film redone. That way the springs will have had a few days to settle in.

Andrew, we'll have to get together sometime, Victor was thinking maybe lunch or something. How's your car doing? At least you are OK. I assume the deer wasn't so lucky...

See everyone soon I hope.

I would love to get the HRE 445s. We'll have to see though. I may go with the I-Forged Aeros or LE37s. So much to think about. Your wheels do look great though Gerald...

Default Thanks

There are wheels and then there are wheels; I have never experienced the level of service that I am presently afforded by HRE.

Outstanding craftsmanship and most responsive group I've ever come across in my ZEE adventure

In the end it's your decision, and you have to ask yourself what your criterions are when selecting wheels.

See you soon

Gerald, did HRE help you out with your scratched rim? Sounds like you had good luck with them.

I am presently working with Bob Hale, the HRE Technical Specialist as to the best method of getting the wheels fixed. I would have to get it off the car first, probably in December through January for the repair work to commence.

You may be interested to know that, when my wheels were being crafted, Bob kept me apprised of the entire process. So I was totally aware of the actual finish date for each stage.

Is that service or what!!

If I can find the post again, about a customer in Japan who ordered HREs’ because of the personal service, I shall post the link.

Wait a minute guys, I forgot that my parents are coming to visit during the days of 12/5 and 12/6. I think I'm out in terms of any meet.

Sorry about that.

Hmm, now I have to explain to them about why my car isn't around.....

Gerald, I sent an email to AXIS for information on their wheels but haven't gotten a response. I guess they aren't aware of customer service like HRE is. I am interested in the HRE 540 wheels as well as AXIS supermesh. But if AXIS doesn't show an interest I may go with the HRE's. Thanks for the info.

Greg, I didn't know you were in the market for wheels.

There is no comparison between AXIS and HRE's as far as wheel quality goes and from what I've read HRE has great customer service. You may want to check with Paul at Avalon Racing as once in a while he puts a HRE groupbuy together and the more buyers he gets the more of a discount he passes along. You definitely will want the most discount you can get as their wheels are pricey.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Greg, you were holding out on us. When did you decide to start shopping for wheels?

As Victor mentioned, the HREs are in a class by themselves (quality and price.)

Let us know what you decide to do.

Guys,

I would suggest that before you wipe the HRE(s) off, as being way over and beyond your budget you may want to first get in touch with the proper sources, i.e. Bob Hale, Paul at Avalon & even XXTuning (a recently appointed HRE dealer).

Some of my rationales were; Superior quality in materials used, design, craftsman, engineering and customer relation/service in its entirety. Bob would say that I am a tough and demanding customer sometimes quite “****” with regards to some of my neurotic needs.

Here are some of the comments made by Bob Hale:

Bob:I'm glad to hear you ordered the HREs... you will not be disappointed.

I did want to address your questions, however!

G: I also hear that the HRE(s) are engineered with top quality aircraft aluminum to become one of the strongest wheels on the market?

Bob: This is absolutely true. Other manufacturers do use 6061-T6 forged aluminum, but there is more to creating a wheel than just the base material.

The 840R series was a ground-up design with NO compromises made. We spent countless hours designing, refining, analyzing, prototyping, and testing these wheels. Some of the technology was born out of our experience R&D'ing the Saleen S7 wheels, which HRE builds as the Original Equipment wheel for this $400,000 supercar.

G:HREWheelMaker, kindly enlighten me as to why the HRE 840R series are way, way above the competition in cost? (this 840R specific question)

Bob:Obviously, the 840R series are beautiful. They were designed to address a portion of potential HRE clients who loved the quality and craftsmanship of our wheels, but didn't like the 'busyness' of the exposed assembly hardware. While we were at it, we gave them clearance for monter brakes systems with the capability of using deep outer lips.

It's what you can't necessarily see that makes these wheels exclusive and expensive. For example, the outer area of the center 'plate' is machined to reduce rotational inertia. The assembly holes are machined for special self-locking inserts which strengthen the mechanical connection between the rims and the center, and enable the wheels to be disassembled and reassembled if the wheels should ever need refinishing or repair (screwing bolts directly into the aluminum can cause the tapped aluminum holes to 'strip-out'). Even the valve stem was designed specifically for these wheels!

These are just a few examples... to be honest, a few of the things we have done are proprietary (I have already said too much!)

G: And, as for brakes, initially it was the Brembos, but now it is between the Stop-Techs and A/P(s).

Bob:Gosh, I thought you were going to make this challenging (LOL). The 840R series will easliy accommoate any brake system you can throw at the 350z. You'll get a nice, fat lip front & rear, too. No problem!

FYI, the StopTech guys are a phenomenal group, I recommend their stuff highly!

Jeff: I'm sorry I wasn't around- probably out doing R&D stuff... I can't wait to see your 'Z in person. You know I am an audio buff... I want to see that system! Sorry, I couldn't make the Mossy show- My GS 400 was getting front & rear sway bars installed!

As always, thanks everybody for your continued interest!

Best regards,

Bob Hale

The 540/540R and 440/440R series are very competitive in their pricing structure for; forged aluminum, aerospace grade materials and custom manufacture 3-piece wheels on the market; encompassing strength and light-weight performance.

Car looks great Jeff. I really like the Tein setup.

What size wheels are you thinking about?

Greg- What size are you going with? I think one of the owners of axis is a member here (AXIS007) Maybe he could answer your Q's

Thanks.

I was thinking of staying with 18", but going wider than stock 245f/275r. I really do like the HRE 445.

Default Axis vs. HRE

You guys, I am not holding out I just needed to slim down my choices. I really was struck by the looks of the Axis wheels but I agree the HREs are by far the better of the two.

Chris - I am looking at 19 x 8.5 front and 19 x 9.5 rear. I got a recent copy of "SUPER STREET" magazine and found these axis wheels.

Jeff - If you go with the 445s, let me know when. Maybe we can get a better price if we go together.

I do like the HREs as well and Gerald has HREs so I should listen to him.

I have all winter to make a decision. I hope to have my final choice mounted by spring.

Here's a pic of the Axis supermesh wheels.
