Default Winter Advice

I'm currently in Texas, but will be moving to the Harrisburg area in June and with the move and getting married in October I don't have money to get a beater for the winter, especially since we still have to find jobs once we move. I was looking at getting some Blizzak tires for winter, but do I really need winter/snow tires or will I be okay with All-Season tires? Any info would help. Thanks

Mike.

I'm assuming Harrisburg, Pennsylvania - Correct me if I'm wrong.

(Perspective from Philly) This winter was quite mild, but before I knew that I took all the precautions I could. Ordered a set of Blizzaks, got some sand bags, and kept my gas tank over the half point line (for weight). It snowed 3 times here and I went out on one of those snowy days. On the road, it did quite well, no traction loss except when I pushed it past 3000 rpm from a stop, but that's expected.

To answer your question, I think it'll depend on how mild the winter really is. If it's as mild as it was this season, your all seasons would be fine. If it snows as heavy as it did last year, I would recommend a set of Blizzaks. If anything, wait until you get an accurate weather report to see what would suit you best.

Yes, Harrisburg, PA. I am currently running Dunlop Direzza Z1 StarSpec. Any recommendations on all-season tires? I figure my best bet would be to put on all-season tires anyway after my current tires are worn out.

TireRack highly recommends the "Briddgestone Potenza RE970 AS Pole Position". They are $204 (Front) / $216 (Rear) each, excluding shipping and the optional road hazard program. Other than that, I've seen people run the Michelin Pilot Sport with similar reviews. Best to checkout the tire forums of this website to answer that question.

I saw a detailed review about the use of snow tires, all season tires, and summer tires. The test conducted resulted in the following:

[Warm Weather]
(1) Summer Tires
(2) All Season-Tires
(3) Winter Tires

[Cold Weather/Snow]
(1) Winter Tires
(2) All Season-Tires
(3) Summer Tires

[Rain]
(1) Summer Tires
(2) Winter Tires
(3) All Season-Tires

They looked at the 0-60 time as well as the stopping distance from 60-0. Although some say that they used unfair tires (eg. better summer than all season tires), the results are pretty general.

On a side note, if you're interested in used All-Season tires, let me know. I have a set with under 5k miles I'm letting go for cheap

I currently have goodyear eagle rsa all seasons and compared to my previous summer tires, they are a hell of a lot better in both snow and rain. the first year i had my z i kept the tires that came with it and i would always slip and slide in the snow and even in the rain no matter how easy on the gas i was. ever since i got these all seasons i havent been slipping in the rain as much and we didnt get much snow this year but when it did snow my car handled fine. i think as long as your smart and cautious about how your driving in these conditions all season tires will be more than sufficient.

hope this helps you out or at least come to a decision.
