I looked into what a trip to the Johnston Ridge observatory would be like.

So for all those interested, here’s how it breaks down: The plan would be to meet at the MSH visitor’s center near Castle Rock off of I-5 (2 hr drive from Seattle / 1:15 hr drive from Portland). From there, we’d head into the mountains on Hwy 504 ‘til stopping at various points taking a break at the Coldwater Ridge visitor’s center (+ 1 hr) and then continuing to the end of Hwy 504 at the Johnston Ridge observatory (+ 15 minutes).
A couple of things to note:
The Coldwater Ridge visitor’s center does have food, but it’s more or less concession stand facilities (can anyone verify that?). There is no other place along the drive where food or drink are available. So at the very least, you should plan to bring your own drink and/or food.
For the most this trip would take us far from civilization. No places to get food, drinks, smokes, etc.. I doubt that any cell phones will work more than a couple miles away from where Hwy 505 & 504 meet so GMRS & FRS radios would be need to communicate.
For the 350z folks in the Seattle area; this is about 6 hrs worth of driving, at least 1 full tank of gas and probably an 8 hr expedition.
It's a trip that might not be for everyone. This drive is not about just hang'n out, or checking out each other's rides. It's more about going for a fun drive, w/ great scenery, in a place where the sound of high reving VQ35 engines can echo off the barren landscape of Hwy 504. If there are any other suggestions, let's hear 'em. If not, let's decide on a date. Seems like the Sat July 23rd is the preffered date so far.

Anyways, I'm totally up for that .... 23rd sounds good, I'll be able to get all of my mods done before then (
) just hope the reflash doesn't blow my engine ....Us seattle area people could even convoy down to the meeting point, no??
Colin
I'll try to make it. The dates good for me, but damn that's a long distance. I'm already an hour and a half north of Seattle. What time in the morning are you guys panning on meeting?
The drive up to Johnston Ridge is better than the drive up to Paradise IMO, there are far less blind turns so you can usually see the road up ahead of you much farther than in landscape covered w/ trees. Also you don't need a park pass to get in and there are usually less people that are on Hwy 405 since the ride to Johnston Ridge is as "tourist friendly" as Rainer. The sights from inside a car up to Johnston Ridge is far cooler since you can see farther, no forest to obstruct the views.
I know a couple of the people here will be at the National Tour and have other things they need to attend to. Does anyone have any strong objections to the 23rd?

(Okay, that was kind of a bad pun.... too early right now, brain's not working as it should be yet.)
FYI: correction to the typo in my previous post. I ment to say: 'Johnston Ridge is NOT as "tourist friendly" as Rainer.'
I've been on the North Cascade Highway a couple of times, but never driven it.
If you guys do go down to Mt. St. Helens on the 23rd, go east on Hwy 12 and come watch the National Tour event.
With G.H. Sharp and Mark Sipe showing up to drive an RX-8, Joe Goeke in his new RX-8, and Ron Bauer in Stephen Hui's Porsche (not to mention Stephen himself!), I figure I'm going to need all the moral support I can get!

Johnston Ridge sure sounds like a lot of driving for some people but it does sound like fun. I don't really know of anything else between Seattle and Portland.
St. Helens might be a nice trip but it's definitely farther for most people.

Sounds good to me. And while searching their site, I came across something almost too perfect:
Johnston Ridge Observatory features:
280-seat theater
10,000 square-foot exhibit hall
staffed information desk
restrooms, public phones, and administrative offices
parking for 350 cars, 50 RV's and 20 buses
viewing plaza
