Default Airbag Shutoff.

Anyone know any local dealers that will install a shut off switch for the passenger airbag? The one in Olympia told me they wouldn't do it, but if I remember right, the manual said that they would. They told me no dealership would. We are thinking about having a baby soon, and it would be nice to be able to take a little one in the Z.

I was considering driving down to Cali, because I read on a different forum that there was a dealership down there. I figured it would be a nice spring drive, but the more I think about it, I may trade in for a new FJ Cruiser...

Anyone? Thanks!

You need to go to the nhtsa web site, request written permission to have it installed. When they send you the letter (it takes a week or so), they'll send you a list of national places that do it, and a web-address with info on local places.

Sensible Solutions charges abour $160 for the kit, and give you DIY instructions

A shop in Florida quoted me $400 for the switch installed.

I haven't done it yet.

I don't, but it's funny you brought this thread up, as I just looked at this thread yesterday. I'm planning to order today.

last time i was told by dealer, you have to be within 12 inches of the stearing wheel when you are adjusted to reach pedals and steering wheel in comfortable position. If you are closer than that, then you have as much danger from the air bag killing you or breaking your nose, than not having it. Otherwise without the waiver from National Safety dept, the dealer is liable if you're toasted in an accident. I'm within 10" [5'4" w/short arms/legs], and considering having it done on the new Z but I'm debating because i expect to drive this one faster than any of my others. Sooo is it broken nose/neck from the bag or smashed face into steering wheel? tough call. If you are short enough for the bag waiver, also consider the modifier to the seat belt at least, and get the strap off your neck and back over your shoulder where it belongs... ~ jp

I just need the switch for my passenger airbags. I would like to pick my son up from school every once and also have it just in case my son has to ride in my car in case of an emergency.

I'm beggin' you, DON'T do this yourself. People get killed every year working on cars when the airbags deploy.

Check out www.airbagonoff.com. They have a network of installers that will come out to your house and install a top of the line on/off switch in the location of your choice. I had one installed in my car, and it was flawless. Cost was about $400. A significant portion of that buys insurance for the installer, that's how risky it is.
