Default hydro-lockage

sooo.... I was on my way to the shop to work on the car and thanks to the awesome weather there was some water on the road. Me being retarded said "eh' I can see the lines no problem" well I was wrong. everything was all good till I tried to go a lil bit faster and then the water caught the greddy lip and enough said. So I had the pleasure of pushing my car out of the water and paying 150 dollars to tow my car a quarter mile to the shop.

Before I towed it I pulled all the plugs and tried to turn it over to push the water out in hopes to save it. We got the water out and all we could get is a quarter turn from the breaker bar on the crank. Any rate we figure a bent rod because we now have it bound up and it wont turn over.

I am going to call my insurance company tomorrow and see what they have to say. But its on a lift at my friends shop and we are going to inspect it some more. It really sucks because we were already planning to turbo charge the car but this just puts me in the shop a lil bit ahead of schedule.

Anyway sorry for the rant, but im pretty bummed right now.

go ahead and flame if you want because I am well aware of my poor decison.

wait I dont get it, you have enough money to turbo charge your car but won't dish out $40 for bypass valve for your cold air intake ? was it a CAI or some other kind of setup ?

So... You are assuming I have an intake.. which I dont. Why buy an intake when you plan on going F/I.

Some water got splashed up and sucked in from the stock location. It was not submerged. there was 6 inches on the road. when I got out the water was up to my ankles. I have lived in oregon my whole life and have driven through plenty of water. And i was doing maybe 5 miles an hour.

yea I assumed, thats why I asked you at the end of my post what setup you had, but damn to have this happen to a stock intake must blow bigtime, what are the chances. And I'm in the Pacific Northwest as well man, so I feel your frustrations as far as the rainy weather goes.

Sucks, but you might as well build the motor now. Go 4.2 stroker kit. Turbos are gay.

yeah, Im gonna have to skip the stroker kit. This wasnt exactly a planned rebuild so funds are limited.

update: After removing everything but the core support and the fenders a closer inspection reveals a hole in the upper pan. We are going to pull the engine tonight or tomorrow and crack it open to see the carnage.

Why not use your funds to build the internals right now? Even if you don't go with a 3.8 or 4.2 stroker kit. Save up some more and go TT down the road. (Only follow this advice if you're smart)

You don't sound too interested in building your car for anything right now. The insurance won't cover it since after market parts were involved. There is probably more damage then just a bent rod, you are better off finding a used VQ35DE/HR at a junkyard.

post up some pics of the carnage when you tear down, risingsunengines.com has great shipping rates and core charges if you decide to go that route.

I am building internals. We planned on boosting the stock motor within a couple months. Now that the motor is toast, I am gonna build it too. Besides while we have the engine out we might as well build the turbo system now so we dont have to pull it out again down the road.

Well... seeing as how my car is on the lift with the toasted engine ready to be removed I would say I am interested in building the motor. I planned on doing this its just awhile ahead of schedule with a few parts added to the list.

The insurance would cover it but I just went to a different company and got a sweet rate so im going to pay for it out of pocket to avoid complications with a raised premium or dropping me all together. If you reread the thread you will see nothing stating I have aftermarket parts, my car is stock. I am suspecting a broken rod since there is a hole in the block. I dont want to replace this engine with a used stock engine that I dont know how it was treated in life especially since im goin F/I. and a hr is out of the question.

update: I was out of town for a week sorry for no updates. Anyways I am not going to try to use the engine it has to much damage for me to try and reuse it. I broke one rod and bent a few of the others. I have to get some better pics of the carnage inside but it took a chunk out of the bottom of the cylinder wall and a chunk off the girdle as well as windowing the upper pan. I am most likely going to order a short block from import parts pro. I still have to pull the heads and inspect them to make sure they werent damaged.

there will be more pics later...

and this is where it all happens.... If you look really close at the truck you will see the front mount hiding under the grill My friend owns the shop and thats the new "shop truck"

Wow!
All that internal damage while going about 5 miles an hour?
Have you determined what caused the catastrophic failure?
I'd be curios to know the cause, especially since I to live in Oregon and my Z has become my daily driver.

Well I was around 5-10 miles an hour. The failure was caused by water in the cylinders. Water doesnt compress, so it caused massive amounts of pressure in the combustion chamber causing a connecting rod to break (the pressure has to be relieved somehow)

basically stay away from water. I learned a very valuable lesson that day, dont be a dumb.
