Latest Mod
So I just got my car back from CarNutz. They installed G37 Paddle Shifters keeping the OEM wheel. Most of the work is custom, they took some pictures of it all before they installed it; it's pretty sick, I'll try to get the pre-install pics from Jim.
I decided to go with the G37 paddles because the paddles are much larger and higher up on the wheel than the Works Bell Paddle Shifter.
A little extra work still needs to be done on it, mainly the paint of the custom column cover to match the rest of the interior (they need to order the matching color); and some tweaks here and there to make it completely clean.
Next Mod however will be the Transgo Valve Body Upgrade and Tranny Cooler, probably won't happen until January/February.

So basically, Adam just set the paddles up to send the correct signals to the tiptronic transmission. A better way of explaining this mod is, the paddles are from a G37, the wiring is not.
Like you stated, I doubt you could just buy the paddles and plug and play them with the default wiring. It was a lot of work, and I believe Adam took a few days to figure out all the wiring; I just left my car with them for a week when I went away for the holidays.
I'm no expert on how this was done, the work is a bit out of my league; all the wiring however was customly done by Adam over at CarNutz; you are welcome to ask him to see how it was exactly done.

In all reality, the paddles are just a fun to play with mod. With the valve body upgrades that Marble suggested to me, the performance of the paddles will increase as well.
