Default ****in window motor :P

had a scare today - passenger window motor wouldn't go back up. I'm well aware that it's a common issue that these motors eventually kick the bucket, but I don't have the time to go out and buy one and figure out how to swap it today. I lucked out after beating the **** out of the door panel and slamming it a couple of times, it barely crept back up.

any of you dudes taken care of this? where is a good spot to buy the new motor from? I hear autozone has re-mfg'ed ones with a lifetime warranty and they give you a core charge that isn't refunded until you bring them your defective one? is that the best route to go?

is there a good DIY post for swapping the motor? going to go looking for that now.

Ezeeesh.....What a PITA that looks like.

If/As/or When mine PHAIL....I sure hope it's still under warranty.

Although....It might be a good time to also swap out the door speakers since everything is apart.

yeah just thoroughly clean everything and re-grease all moving parts with lithium grease and you should be ok, unless the motor truly is the problem...

Almost everyone that has just did the clean, has had to later replace the motor. You might as well buy the new one. I am waiting until the winter to do this one...have been saying that for a year now!!! lol

save yourself the trouble and go to autozone and replace them. I have cleaned mine 3 times and still have the problems. When I get back from vacation, I am going to tear it apart again and just replace the motors this time.

I'll clean it once and take it as a learning experience of how to tear all that **** apart and put it back together. if it fails a 2nd time it will be replaced.

word that is how I got the son of a ***** to roll back up. I had to slam the door and beat the **** out of the panel, I really didn't want to need a "in a pinch" fix and have to borrow a friends garage until the weekend, or even worse, go to the dealership and take it in the *** in labor costs.

it's getting nicer out though, and I like to roll my windows down, but I'm afraid to roll that one down now.. or if a friend gets in and I forget to tell him not to roll it down, that would suck. trying to avoid a situation where I get stuck with it down. :P

if you go order it from autozone it'll take 2 business days for it to come in, so my best advice is for you to have it ordered by wednesday night, otherwise it won't be in til monday...

I still need to do that too, just haven't been motivated by enough nice weather yet. The window lock's been on for at least a year now, but occasionally when someone opens that door it'll roll itself down, prompting me to slam my door silly while holding the button until there's enough to grab onto and pull up with my fingertips.

I'm thinking along the same lines as you- clean it once, maybe twice if it last long enough, before throwing money at it. You want to combine forces for this one? Misery loves company, and everybody loves beer...

When you clean the motor, undercut and chamfer the commutator. Very easy job!

would you save the grief of looking it up and explain what a chamfer and a commutator is, and what they look like on our Z's? lol

chamfer means to cut the edges, similar to a bevel but at a slant. brake pads are chamfered. pretty much turn it into a snowboard shape. the commutator is used to alternate the current to make the motor work in 2 directions i.e. up and down. not sure how you "chamfer" such a thing though. diagram please?
