Attending School in Norcal - What to do about my G?
Hi guys. well, first off I already know this is going to be quite a stretch. I'm going to be attending Berkeley this fall semester (first year) and so far have not planned on bringing my g35 up. I'm required to dorm the first year and have not gotten a campus parking permit. I understand that this place is not very car-friendly and there is no way in hell i am going to simply get a pass and park on the side of any street.
Any recommendations on what to do? Parking structures are out of the question as well, I've had one too many friends whose cars were broken into multiple times. I think I'd only be comfortable private apartment parking or an actual house garage. I actually don't even mind not being able to drive that much, I just want my car closeby. maybe head over and detail once a week, and be able to have a nice long drive back down to socal during the breaks. you all know the feeling
im starting to feel pretty desperate here. i got less than a month left. i think i'm going be more "car-sick" than homesick.
anyone wanna take her in?

maybe leave the G home for the first year... since socal isnt too far and you can always come home for the weekend and drive her around... then the following year, find a place or a room with a garage and then if its close enough... invest in a bike and use that to go to campus...
i'm going through pretty much the same situation except i'm from norcal but going to socal for school in fall.. i don't want to but i'm probably going to have to leave my car at home
I just passed through Diamond Bar today on my way back from Palm Springs. What a mess on the Hwy 60. The road was shut down for half the day due to a big rig accident.
Now to your question. I used to live and work in Oakland and you're absolutely right about Berkeley not being a very car friendly campus. I would recommend that you leave your car at home for the first year. After that, if you choose to live off campus you can try to rent a house with a garage. I definitely would not recommend parking your G35 anywhere on the streets of Berkeley/Oakland.
Good luck in your academic career and GO BEARS beat Stanford!

yea the entire area around the 60 was jammed today. i was stuck in traffic forever as well, didnt know it was a big rig incident . anyway, thanks for all the feedback guys. i really dislike the idea of leaving the car at home for a whole year though
i went to berkeley as well and if i were you i would just leave your car at home for the first year then bring her up when you get an apartment with parking after the first year. i know you'll miss your car but its not worth taking the chance of getting it messed around with

I used to live right across the street from Lake Merritt in Oakland in a building called the Regillus. It's a condo with about 40 units. Most folks were older and many retired so they didn't have much use for their garage parking and rented it to other people in the building. Might want to check for these types of situations. Perhaps out up flyers up in buildings you would want to park in? Incidentally I didn't rent from any of my neighbors but I did rent an outdoor space from the building across the street and that ran me $100.00 / month for an uncovered un protected space (did have a camera on it though). So you can expect a covered space to be priced higher, at least around this neighborhood. There is this huge condo hi rise off 80 in Emmeryville. Might want to start there as I'm sure they have tons of parking. Good luck!

It would probably be best to just leave your car at home for the first year until you get an apartment that has a garage. In the meantime, you could get a bike to get to and from school.

Well, if you have the money and having the car near you is a requirement or gives you piece of mind. I'd say post something in the wanted section and see if someone can rent you some garage space or a safer place. Can't be with out your G-irl.
