I went to UC Berkeley in Mech E...loved it! It's fairly theorectical and seems to be a great school if you're planning on post grad work. I've heard Cal Poly is really great on the practical side (my dad went there).
In general, I feel Cal gave me a solid engineering background and that I have the theroy to understand many disiplines within engineering...but I think if I had gone to a school like Cal Poly, I would be able to do a lot more at this point. (I graduated 2 years ago and have been working in the forensic engineering field)
I haven't heard much about the other school's engineering departments.

UC davis is my school.. a partying school no doubt.. it has a tight college campus/town atmosphere... most people take bikes or bus to school because parking is very limited....
davis is strong in medical/biochemistry.A lot of my friends went on to UCSF and continued their medical/dental education after graduating from Davis...

I would say UC Irvine! Safest and a very nice school indeed. My sister graduated from UC Davis, It is a very good school, but it is VERY VERY BORING! Its out in nowhere... Be warned!
SJSU for almost any kind of engineering. SJSU's College of Engineering ranks pretty high up there as far as west coast universities are concerned. Very good school, although I don't want to admit it (I hate school of any sorts hahhah)

I would say in no particular order:
UCD - Great school but nothing to do out there but drink up. Their downtown is very small & they do have a few bars but it gets old real fast. Only other option is to drive to downtown Sac. Now if you're an outdoors type of guy, Tahoe is not that far away. No issues with driving & parking since they have tons of flat/open space. Most people walk, ride a bike, or take the bus though. Weather there is generally really hot during the summer & really cold during winters. (GF went there)
CAL - Extremely competitive. BART trip from SF if you ever wanted to party in the city. There are interesting places to go in that area but just don't wonder off to Oakland. You can easily find yourself in areas where you shouldn't be & crime has been on an increase. If you drive, parking sucks! Weather there is similar to SF. (Ex went there)
SJSU - Great Engineering program. Definitely a party school since it's located right smack in the heart of downtown SJ where all the clubs & bars are. Driving is not too bad but you will hit some traffic & parking can occationally be a pain since you are in downtown especially if you're trying to rush to class. Weather is generally really good. (Attended a couple of years)
Cal Poly - Just heard from many of my close friends that they have a great Engineering program.

thanks for the great input guys! yeah such a hard decision all seem to be pretty good...berkeley outranking the rest...if anymore input i would appreciate it
I would say Irvine... Had a lot of friends that went there. Not sure of their engineering program but they have a lot of chicks! Especially if you're into Asian chicks... LAWD HAVE MERCY! I had good times down there....
For real though.... All the schools you put down have good programs. For me, it came down to where I felt comfortable. Best thing to do is go check'em out and see if you like the vibe, area, people, etc.
I had a friend who went to USC on scholarship and absolutely hated it. He came back after a year and a half and finished at cal state hayward or east bay (whatever they call it now).
Good luck!

Went to UC Irivne and it's similar to Davis in that it's pretty boaring, but LA is only an hour away so you can drive there for some fun. But the weather is much better than up here and living in Newport Beach is very fun. Cal Poly does have a good engineering school and Cal is probably the best in terms in ranking and rep. We recruit from Cal, but not from any of the other school. Davis, I believe is more well known for their biology and medical school then engineering.
Having said all this, I would highly, highly recommend you visit all the schools you are thinking about attending. Everyone and anyone can give you their opinions and thoughts, but you might like one place better than the other after visiting it for yourself. No one knows what you want out of college except for yourself.
