college?
There only two UC's that are worth mentioning are Cal and UCLA. I went to Davis by the way.
No one has really heard of the other UC's if you go out of state, so they're all the same.
I would not touch sjsu or calpoly since they're both regional schools, meaning less than 75% of their facualty have PhDs and they don't get Federal funding for research or do not even do much research, which usually means the professors there aren't the top in the nation.
All of the UC's are National Universities (75%+ PhD facualty and a lot of research opportunity). They receive Federal funding and attract better researchers because of it.
You want to be with the best and the brightest. Hence, UC's schools are usually better than CSU's.

i agree, cal and ucla. But also UCSD (for Biomedical eng. not really mech e)
berkeley is nice, I go there often. The food is great and there's always something going on. SF is 15 min away too.

I agree that UC's are more nationally recognized and would help in finding jobs...but one thing that was made perfectly clear to me while I was job searching is that connections matter! I got my current (first) job through my research work that I did as an undergraduate...I've still tried to keep in touch with my professors b/c they have tons of contacts (plus, I really like them and they're nice ppl).
If you goto Berkeley, I'd say sell the car and get a motorcycle...parking is much easier, it's free, and you get better gas mileage. I love the Berkeley campus, it's got food from all over the world within a few blocks of campus, it's close to SF (as a student you get free Bus transportation, which includes to/from SF). The north side is where the engineering departments are and it's failry relaxed and low key; but if you're into protests and larger crowds, head to the south of campus and you'll find that too.

yeah sadly i didnt get into CAL...this year public education had extra people apply...so as a result more smarter people applied and got in so it was much more difficult for me and many others...and there was a lower acceptance rate at the crazier colleges such as Yale and Harvard for examole (8% acceptance rate compared to 13%)...but its all good...i went to all the colleges over my spring break and UCLA (wow i wish i was going here i love the campus so much its sexy!!!) Irvine and San Diego were out of the question for me because my parents dont want me to move out there and the hassle of it is way to much for them...they basically pushed to go to a school in Nor/Mid Cal (easy drive access...eventhough they will never visit...they are wierd) so i decided to go to davis...it should be fun...my brother graduated last year from there with a bachlors in EECS....

I went to Cal Poly and graduated in computer science....***** that!! Mostly theory but employers love that school for some reason. I'm looking for work right now at northrop grumman. Go to either UC school, just good luck on paying for it.

It goes like this . . . Cal, UCLA, SD, Irvine, Davis if we're talking about UC's. Cal has fugly chicks that think they're hot but they're not. UCLA, SD, Irvine you'd have much better eye candy. As for recruiters after college, Cal & UCLA will look better regardless of what major you end up with.
I say regardless of what parents say . . . they'll get used to it. If not, you're old enough and make a decision based on what you want, not them. In the end, just pay for college yourself . . . it's not that hard.
