Which engine (intake/exhaust) modifications will pass smog in CA?

It is my understanding that the Z should be able to pass smog inspection in CA with the pop charger installed (is this correct?). It is also obvious that turbos, supercharging, and headers will not pass smog.

What about some of the other common mods (Motordyne 5/16 spacer, MREV, exhaust, etc.)? Will these or any other intake/exhaust modifications pass smog check in CA?

Catback exhaust will. I've got the Motordyne 1/4" spacer and I passed smog (had it checked just for kicks to see if it would pass and also to see if the techs would notice anything).

 

This also needs a sticky.

Motordyne spacer isn't legal but undetectable.

 

Vortech or Stillen S/C.

Most DC headers are 50 state legal.

 

injen intake but the only gains shown is from the short ram.... carb legal..

 

only the older model injen intakes are CARB legal...forgot the model # something like 1985

 

Based on this info I am guessing that the smog emissions reading with the Motordyne spacer (and Pop Charger) installed will not be any different than without it, and the only way that the car may not pass the smog will be based on the visual inspection by the tech who may or may not notice the spacer. everything is smog legal up to the point where you put on turbo(s) or test pipe in ca.

but i know that stillen and nismo cat backs will pass visual as well due to the carb legal # that they are certified with, i think the pop charger will pass visual for the same reason too.

 

Nismo cats and Stillen cats are not CARB legal. Not sure where you got that info. There is no such thing as a CARB legal cat for the Z. The popcharger is actually 50 state legal.

exhausts do not get a carb #. basically if does not delete the cats and it complies with the 95db rating then it's legal.

 

There is no CARB legal turbo kit on the market.

 

K & N Typhoon is CARB Approved. How about a crank pulley, clutch/flywheel combo and tuning?

not sure what to make of JWT's advertisement . . . but I think it's leaning towards telling consumers there kits are CARB LEGAL.
