im about to move back into the bay area from north carolina. ( finally getting out of the army ) and the car will be registerd in nc for about a year while im living in ca. i plan on getting my windows tinted and doing some upgrades such as twin turbo's. now i heard that there is only 2 ca legal turbo kits. now will i have to follow those rules having the car registerd in nc? and once that expires i was thinking about registering it in az cause my grandpa lives there. has anyone else registerd there car in another state to avoid the ca state emmisions laws? and what is the legal limit on tint? and one more, will turbo's and other performance inhansing parts make the Z fail smog, or do they just catch the illegal parts on inspection?
NO turbo kits are CARB legal.
there are 2 supercharger kits that are
#1 Stillen Stage 2 (only, stage 1 is NOT CARB legal)
#2 Vortech
Tint. You cannot have any tint on the front two windows. The rear windows and the hatch window may be as dark as you like.
I am twin turbo'd and tinted dark all the way around. I registered in Virginia since I am not a state resident (Military). I am not required to do annual smog tests for California.

yes, with turbo's they will be caught during smog and you will be disqualified. meaning fail the smog test. California has the strictest laws when it comes to smog. That is why most states that worry about smog and polution adopt C.A.R.B. as their own law. You will see most aftermarket parts that you will buy will either have C.A.R.B. or will be working to get their C.A.R.B. cert.
As far as being registered out of state, you can get away with that, but the CHP will sometimes have stings where they will target cars that have out of state plates to find out how long they have been in the state. If you are in the state for longer that 30 days california law states that you have to register your vehicle with the DMV unless you are in the active military. They will issue you a ticket and you will have to varify with DMV that you are not living in CA. Meaning showing proof such as a bill showing the address is in another state and that doesn't always satisfy them.
I dont want to scare you off but these are things that you could get dinged for and wont be able to drive your vehicle if you get marked as a person that has an illegally register vehicle in CA and you could have hefty fines.
