Default problem

i'm wondering if any of you have this problem. my brakes makes sounds. no, they're not worn. they're brand new, had them replaced on monday. i don't understand where it's coming from and neither does the people that have looked at my car. they say my pads, rotors, drums, and calipers are fine. no damage.

i park on an inclined driveway at home. i wonder if that is responsible for it but then again many people park on hills all day in sf. every morning when i release my handbrake to back out i hear it, a muffled rubbing and sometimes a squeak. and then throughout the day i go hours without hearing anything (i drive a lot for my job) and then sometimes it starts squeaking and then i never hear it again.

it sounds like a muffled rubbing. it's not a screech or squeak. a friend who works at Honda says it could be that those are performance brakes and they're known to make sounds like that. is that true? i got mine at beshoff, as far as i know they're not performance brakes. i read some posts on GTRs at g35driver and those owners complain about the same thing.

what kind of performance car makes such unpleasant sounds like that? it can't normal. it's embarassing too because people think i got cheap brakes or i need to change my brakes. but they're brand new. please help.

if they are brand new... give it sometime... What parts were replaced? rotors or pads? also which brand did you go with?

Sometimes High Performance brakes or racing brakes make unpleasant noises and they are not cheap :P

^Yeah, What they said...

Did you get ceramic brake pads?

High performance breaks make noise when they are cold.

I paid $81 for two front pads. They're Nissan. I didn't ask for performance brakes. They look regular to me and the bill showed they're stock pads. The car is 35800 right now. It made sound before so I changed the pads thinking something's wrong and it's still making the same sound. Just annoying.

Don't car about performance when it makes sounds like it's about to croak. Any recommendation for normal pads? Thanks.

If they are OEM brake pads, the noise should go away. Also, make sure to clean your rotors if you commute and park outside. I live in the city, commute daily, and park on the street. When I had OEM pads and rotors, I'd get the brake squeak once in a while. Using brake cleaner helped sometimes.

BTW, if you don't fix the squeak noise... VOLUME THE RADIO UP!

i'd like to know who this "they" is that looked at your car and said the drums are fine.....since we don't have drums! lol. i wouldn't trust that person.

If it's only an occasional squeek when you back out or every now and then throughout the day then i wouldn't worry. I think every one of my vehicles has made some sort of squeek or creak when i just start driving them.

Brake dust can cause a squeek. They make brake squeel stop stuff that you spray on the back of the pads. That will help. You have to remove your pads to use it.

I mispoke when i said drums, but basically the mechanic at Infiniti and my friend who works at Honda both say all the parts look fine. when they replace the brakes, they did use a brake cleaner and cleaned all the parts. he added what he called a "dry brake lubricant." so all the parts were completely clean when they put if back together. no more sand or residue. the lip was fine too.

you might be right about the grooved rotors. i suspect there's something uneven or warped because why would anything make a sound unless its a good fit.

there are days when it only makes the sound in the morning. then there are days when it makes the loud sound all day when i brake at stops. some days it's a combo of no sound for long periods and suddenly it makes loud sound. i don't think it's normal to have brakes like that.

this isn't the scrunching sound of a release or clamp down. this is a screech and sometimes a muffled squeak. happens when i brake hard and even when moving in the parking lot.

and Cali-Darkness...who's Chris? How can I contact him?

Chris runs a shop and can help 350z/g35 community with installs or any mechanical issues. PM him at CECperformance. He does a top notch job and the price cannot be beat!

It could be normal just like everyone said, but def take to Chris(everyone recommending is a hint!!!) But I had the same problem (and still do) when I put my new pads and rotors on all 4 corners... Sometimes the materials used to make the pads cause noise... Get your rotors checked for warping.. GL

So, technically there is a drum setup in the rear primarily for the e-brake.

Also w/ used rotors noise could be highly possible. If the noise does not go away then definitely take it for a second opinion.

good burn, very true.

I was only giving you a hard time about the drums thing. I figured it was just a typo.

The anti-squeek that we've used on a lot of other brakes is a sticky film you spray on the backside of the pads.

The backside of the pads contact the pistons of the calipers. They are both metal so it's a metal on metal contact. When you start to brake they rub together and sometimes back and forth just slightly and just fast enough to cause a "squeek".

Mine did it before and still do it every now and then with all new brake rotors and pads. I'm just used to the fact that cars and sometimes make squeeks at times. It's hard to say that it's not a harmful problem unless i can hear it. I would have a qualified mechanic listen to it and he could tell you right away if it's just normal brake squeek.

Thanks. Beshoff couldn't figure it out and they charged me a ton. I live in south bay. Z car I've heard many good things but don't know if I'll be extra poor afterwards. It's a performance shop, do they have patience for brake problems?

Sounds like Chris is your best bet. He is out in Berkeley though, worth the drive IMO. He has done most of the work on my car. I would also suggest Josh since he is out in Fremont but not sure if he is still busy with his project.

GL, hope you can get it fixed.

Ya, if it's only making a noise when you activate/move your e-brake it's not the pads. The drums/drumshoes inside your rear rotors may be worn or something, dunno.

Off-topic, but mentions the project mu drumshoes:

it makes the sound when i release the e-brake and during normal driving too. when i stop at lights and even when im moving in the parking lot. doesn't happen all the time, but some days are worse than others. very strange. ghost in the machine type thing. very annoying.

so this weekend im going to have someone look at it again.
