Default Platinum tint worth the extra $$$ ?

Well, I went to my local reputable tint shop for an estimate yesterday. The shop is "A Shade Darker" in Santa Rosa. I have had all my cars done there for the past 10 years, and I know that Jeff knows his stuff.

I got a quote of $219 for all 5 windows at 35%. Seemed okay to me.

He also recommended that I might try the 35% "Platinum" tint, for better performance against UV and heat. The price would go up almost $100 (totaling about $300 for all 5 windows)

Is this a worthwhile upgrade? What have some of you paid for your tint? I remember the tint thread in here, but searched and couldn't find much info...

well a 4 hour round trip from Santa Rosa to Pleasanton and back to save $41 might not be too practical, and will eat up much of that $41 savings just in gas

Besides when it comes to skilled labor, price is subjective, a cheaper shop might be a good deal or the worst money you ever spent. be Jeff shop does the best tint in town and is the only shop Smothers Mercedes and Prestige BMW will use.

As for platinum, I had it installed on my car and am very pleased with it. I have been pulled over for tint before and 50% platinum is less conspicuous than 50% charcoal, though I dont like the way platinum looks on any color other than white or silver but thats just me, I think it looks great on Silverstone, I getting it on my wife new SS

I have not heard of Platinum Tint, but I have 20% in the back and everything else is in 35%. The tint on my car was the most expensive option my local shop in Texas offered. The tint is metallic and is supposed to be the best at keeping the sun's rays out so it sounds to me like my tint and Platinum Tint might be the same thing. I paid like $220.00 total for tint+install+taxes, so $300 sounds like a rip-off to me but it could be something different altogether.

Oh noes!!!11 Not another Silverstone in Santa Rosa, Jeremy!! (Just don't let her get ADR's ... there is already a white Z driving around that copped my style )

So, what do you think about the price? Is Jeff pulling my lariat? I don't mind the price so much, because I know his work is quality, and he has done a TON of Z's.

*shrugs* ... I just don't really trust any of the other shops around here.

well I know the platinum is more expensive than regular Llumar(dont know how much though), and I know he charges everyone an extra $100 for it, so its not just you, but...

yeah $100 does seem a bit much

When Jeff quoted me prices over a year ago he wanted $300 for the standard and $400 for the platinum. Looks like he's coming down in price.

I was told the Platinum had a life time guarantee too unlike the standard.

Possibly. Mine doesn't sit in the sun much (let alone daylight) at all so I'm not too concerned about fading. It would be for looks mostly.

I just bought sway bars and want/need A-arms which to me are more important so my funds are kind of pre-allocated. If Jeff wants to make an offer......

I'll call him and see what he says. Might be able to get him to knock off $50 or something, so it'd still be about $250-260. I'll let you know and we'll go from there. I am looking to do mine prob on a Saturday (since I work during the week) ... maybe within the next few weekends.

Getting Platium or mirror tint is just asking to get pulled over. A buddy of mine got his on his M3 and it was constantly being pulled over even though the front was light enough to see through. It's one of those things where if you spend the 3 bills to get it done, but get harassed and paying fines rather than take it off, it becomes more trouble than what it's worth.

Platinum is NOT the same as mirror tint(ghetto) it is actually much less conspicuous than regular tint as well since 50% platinum does not appear as dark as 50% charcoal even though they perform equal, and at night when no light hits it its almost impossible to tell a platinum car is even tinted while a regular tinted car looks even darker

I've been checking some stats on the Llumar site and the Platinum has the highest reflective properties of all their films (13% compared to 8%) but the Solar Energy rejection is better. It would be nice to know what Jeff's standard film is to compare (Llumar has 7 different films). The UV protection is the same for all, 99%.

I personally would go with 50%, nothing darker.

Jeremy's comments about the Platinum are very interesting.

i've gotta back up krinkov about the platinum. i've had 35% platinum on my last 2 cars, and never had a problem. it's very inconspicuous. more than that, it looks great on silver cars, i think. i've got a liquid aluminum Z, lighter than your silverstone, but still, same principle. can't help you with prices since i'm on the east coast and only paid about 200 to get both my rides done. but i will definitely vouch for the platinum. oh, and yeah. it does have a lifetime warrantee, although i doubt you'll need it. i've never had a problem with mine, and it's been on one vehicle or another of mine for about 3 years.

Thanks for the clarification, some reason I always put them together as same as mirror tint.

yeah you would definitly see the difference in person, mirror tint is just like a mirror, platinum is only partially reflective when light hits it(daytime) and not reflective at night

I can vouch for Vincent at Omega tintwerks' skills. As can many members of the I-Club, S2K International, Street Racing Online, Club RSX, and numerous other local message boards, including many members of this one. I am not only of his relation, but am a great admirer of his talent with manipulating window film. Ive tried it and failed miserably..haha. Vincent will take good care of you and his work is guarantee for either your life or the life of your car...whichever ends first..haha.. just kidding about the second part.
