Default Speeding on the 5!

Got caught North Bound on the 5. I was doing about 90...cop on south bound claims I was doing 108. Whatever. I have to deal with it regardless.

Anyone get a speeding ticket on the 5? What happened? How much was your fine? Or did you get suspended?

Help!

Last time I was on the 5 (ruined my front bumper, argh!) I almost got nailed. Got lucky.

I was cruising along at about 100 and some change. Then some idiot in a 300M decided to tailgate me at triple digits. Now that is plain stupid and dangerous, especially in an American full size sedan.

I got annoyed with his high beams glaring off my ultra shiny red body. So, I moved to the right and let off the gas. He eventually passes me.

I check my rear view mirror then side view before getting back into the fast lane. I had to hold off my lane change because I notice a car coming up real fast. I figured it was another idiot and did not want to be tailgated again. Well, this idiot pauses next to me and he is a CHP!

Mr. CHP waves me to slow down with a stare that could be seen through the blackness on the 5 at night. Now I said he was an idiot, but I must apologize. He was the smartest law enforcement officer I have seen. He turned on his lights and went on pursuit of the 300M.

Approximately, 5 minutes later I saw the two pulled to the shoulder. I can only imagine the conversation.

Officer: "So you were tailgating that exotic sports car?"

Idiot: "No, I was admiring Nissan's new moving art work."

Officer: " I know, I had to stop and stare at that red Z. Guy probably **** in his pants."

Idiot: "Yeah, pretty amazing car. Really looked smooth at 105mph."

Officer: "Oh, so you were tailgating him at 105mph? I guessed 118."

Idiot: "DOH, I'm stupid!"

Last night on 880 this matrix passes me at about a hundred I caught him and passed around 135 then backed off, so im already slowed down and this i see this car in my rear view as well moving up pretty fast but i was only at about 65 and he was still a ways back and i guess there was a silver altima behind me <a new one> and i see the blue and red led's come on and the altima got pulled, so i jump off the freeway go to starbucks and go into the parking lot, and I hear the cop coming off the freeway on his loudspeaker telling the car to pull into the parking lot across the street,

possible diologue

altima: It wasn't me
cop:silver nissan it had to be you
altima: It wasn't me
cop:well its unklucky for u
altima:But,it wasn't me

i hope the cop didn't think it was him but i dont know

Sorry it wasn't on five, dont mean to threadjack

RNL323/shortcut3d/03_350, you guys not running radar!??!
Granted it won't do too much without some bogeys in front of you.
Good luck with the ticket.

No radar. I have to admit it would have saved my butt from a 35 in a 25 school zone safety enforcement ticket. (I hate little brat kids, jk LOL). On the 5 I'm sure the come was going the opposite direction and noticed what was going on.

I stopped speeding after my last ticket because I had to use my traffic school free pass. I use to go 140+ on 680 in the early morning hours after pleasanton.

That was stupid. I admit. But the Z does it oh so well.

becareful out there on 5...

on the way back from LA on Sunday, saw a semi torched to skeleton on it's side on the southbound side. Luckily I was going Northbound. When we passed it, the tire was still burning with flames...

with that said, never drive long distance or speed without radar. It's a piece of mind as well as you fully knowing that the cop can't get an exact reading on you since you would have slowed down before he gets to you. Well of course unless he's using laser...

V1.. a good investment...
11-99 an even better investment

RNL323,
Take Dave's (whatever) advice. Get a radar detector, preferrably V1, since most CHPs on I-5 have their radar on. You can't drive at high speeds w/out those directional arrows.

If he pulled you over, then he most likely had you on his radar. Best way to get this off your record is to go to court and have the speed reduced to 95. This way, you can still go to traffic school. Speeds greater than 25mph above the posted speed limit disqualifies you from traffic school.

really? I'll have to file that piece of information away....although I usually don't go over 95 when driving on I-5.

I've been in traffic school too much to have this information embedded in my memory. Also, one of my past instructors was a former CHP officer and he gave us all the tricks in the book that you can get away with. And yes, they have qoutas even though they confidently deny it.

A couple of the tricks he told us and I've tried them both w/ success:
1.) If you see them going much faster (90-120mph) than the posted speed limit or max speed w/out their patrol lights activated, follow them and write down their license plate and report it to the CHP headquarters. At those high speeds, it is their responsibility to have those lights on to alert the drivers on the road. I did this once going 115 w/ my gf in the passenger seat. I even got right next to him and he didn't do anything about it.

2.) If they tailgate you for no apparent reason (patrol lights not activated) and flash their high beams, slam on your brakes immediately! According to DMV driving rules, they must give you at least a 2-3 second gap.

If I only had my digicam within reach, my gf would've recorded the whole event. Funny thing was that he waved at me as soon as we got next to each other (and I waved back). He took an offramp and I thought he would come back to get me, but I saw him go Northbound.

I have to agree with Dave here. I drove from Arizona to Pennsylvania to Florida to Delaware to California and it has paid for itself 10 times over, but you never know so stay safe out there.

Update!

Judge hooked up it with the lowest possible fine $637 and 15 day suspension...Then he talked about how much he loves the Z in front of the open court.

Thanks everyone. I learned my lesson and currently shopping for a radar detector.

What the heck? $637?! Jeez, that's pricy. What was the ticket written up as? 108 mph?
