Relocating to Hickam AFB
Am getting stationed at Hickam AFB, thought I'd say what's up... Gonna be here for 3 years, so I hope to meet up with some of the local Z enthusiasts and get a feel for the area... Will be on-site on Monday, but the Z is gonna be about 2 months behind me... Anyway, guess that's all for now...

Ok, so I just dropped off my Z at Vehicle Processing in Charleston, SC. Got a question, they were unable to answer it.
Am I required to register the car in Hawaii, or can I leave it registered in NC? I thought because I'm military, I could leave it registered in my home of record...
Thanks.

Yes, you can keep your NC plates, but your still gonna have to rock a safety inspection sticker. Some of the places are cool about you having out of state tags, but personal experience says its easier to just get the HI tags and the cops eyes off of your for at least that reason. If you choose to put the front plate on is another conversation all together........

K. I was thinking about just keeping my NC tags, but if it's easier to switch, I might consider that...
How strict is the safety inspection sticker? I have a small crack on my windshield, above my NC inspection sticker, and was told that I won't pass unless I got a new windshield...

That all depends on where you take the car, who inspects it, how much you want to come out of pocket. They are kinda strict out there about mods and recon stickers. But you can find people here and there to pay a little extra and overlook things. When you get closer to being on the ground in Hawaii, you can ask in the forum and someone might point you in the right direction for that service. I'll be back in October from the big sandbox and I'm gonna need safety inspection as well.

Seeing that I just got here, I had a hard time getting mine passed. It is much easier just to change to HI plates and cheaper in the long run. From what I remember, car registration is about $25/year as long as you have the non-resident form you can get from your Orderly Room. Let me know when you hit Island. I can point you in the right direction as far as safety and registration.

Yes, but some folks try to get around it. From what I hear, if you don't get your car reconed, has been modified, and you get pulled over that you may be in for one nice chunk of change for fix it tickets.
