Today driving home from work, to get ready for school, I get pulled over. I got pulled over not for speeding but for recon. The road I was driving on was jacked up, pot holes and uneven, like majority of the roads in Hawaii. As result it's a bumpy ride when going down that road. Anyways, he said my car was bouncing irradictly due to my suspension. What pissed me off was this fool then cited me for illegal tint. At first tagging me for just one, but when I asked him what would be considered legal tint in Hawaii so that I can rectify the cituation, he got upset and decided to tag me for three windows instead of just one. My windows were measured at 24.7%.
I guess I got to try and get recon now and figure out what Ima do about this tint because I am not paying 287 per window. I know there was a thread about passing recon and stuff like that a while ago, does anybody have the link?

Ya, 35% is what is legal. My question is for those of you guys that have been ticketed for illegal tint, is there a way out of paying the 280? ie. remove tint or something like that?

Sorry, that happend. My tint is still texas tint, just hadn't got popped yet....knock on wood! try and write a letter to get the ticket reduced, say something like your car is a show car and you just took it out that day, they won't know the difference. Wouldn't help but to try. I did that for my exhaust ticket and came back in my favor only paid a fraction of the ticket not the whole thing.

remove your tint and put legal tint on your car...say you bought the car that way...Send a letter saying your sorry and provide the pictures of the tint off your car...pretty much act retarded...I did that for my civic and they dropped my tint charge that was 280 per window...save me 700 bucks...then put legal tint on or call harry potter for that invisible cloak for your car...

That really sucks bro. From what I hear, the best way to get around all of this is what Ian said; remove the illegal tint and install 35%. Then you can snap a few pictures, send it in with a letter stating your confused on the situation because you "always had" legal 35% tint. hopefully they'll let you off.

Did he measure your tint on the spot? If not, you stand a good chance. But all of this sounds like he was out to get you from the start. Maybe that's the same cop that pulled Carlos over who completely hated Z's. The whole suspension thing...man that's BS. They really should be pulling over those ancient vehicles that literally hop all over the road due to shot suspension!

Thanks guys! Ya this fool was out to get me from the start. He hit me for recon and measured all the windows on the spot. The more I questioned him the more he added on windows and kept giving me attitude. From the start he was giving me attitude from the start.

Thanks for all the help guys. In order to get out of these tickets I decided to go Hawaii standards legal lol. I scheduled an appointment for Recon and I am going to redo the tint on my car to 35%.
I spoke with the lady from recon and a lot of the requirements to pass recon has changed.
For those of you guys contemplating it, I will let you know how I do.
FYI
The lady I spoke with at recon told me:
rims is no longer a recon item, as long as they don't touch or rub fendor while turning, exhaust is not a recon item, bodykit and spoiler is not a recon item, as long as your tires are not touching the fender and you provide allignment papers with specs you can pass suspension for recon, and the middle of your headlights need to be atleast 22 inches from the ground (they no longer measure from the license plate), for those of us with our safety stickers on the metal bracket/ plate you can still pass it no longer has to be stickered to the bumper as long as the metal plate is attached and secured to the bumper, and you are not allowed to have any covers on your license plates.
Some of you guys may have already known this, but I know I didn't, so I figured I would let the rest of you guys know. Now, I have not taken my car down there yet, and everything I just posted was information given to me over the phone, so we will see what happens when I go down there on the 18th. I will be sure to keep you guys posted.

GREAT info Jorge....this is what people need to know. I'm still puzzled about the suspension part (22 inches from the middle of the license plate). So does this mean, if you're dropped..no matter what type of suspension (springs, coils, bags)...as long as your 22 inches from the ground, you're good?

Again this was info that was given to me over the phone by a lady who works at the recon station. Anytime suspension is modified on car you need recon. In order pass : tires can not be touching/ rubbing fenders, the measurement from the ground to the middle of the headlight must be a minimum of 12in, you also need to have allignment papers with specs dated no more than 30 days from appointment with recon, that's pretty much it from what she told me. My appointment for recon is two weeks from now I will be sure tonpost here and let you guys know how I do. I hope this clarifies your question Aj.

tint tickets are non sense.... its a ticket thats very preventable. if you got the tint here, they let you know what is legal. no excuses on that. yah, i think its bs for the multiple tickets.... but hey, they can always go out of they're way and say your vehicle is unsafe and have you tow your car. or have you rip the tint off yourself on the spot before you drive away. the cop has every right to ticket you for everything that is not "legal" on your vehicle.

on a good note though.... recon is soooo much easier than before. now its to where your car must be really fked not to pass. i'd say 2 trips to recon is what it takes in order to pass. the good thing is that they let you know exactly what to change and give you another month or so to fix it but they only charge you once. i think the only hassle is the alignment thing.

oh yah, make sure the car is free of stickers and take the broadway mirror off and clear around the shifter.

Ya it sucked that he hit me for multiple windows, but what I'm saying is I did not put the tint on the car. The car was put on prior to me purchasing the car, as the car was previously owned by my uncle. I would have much rather remove the tint on the spot than have him issue me the tickets. The tint on the car was 6% away from being considered legal. In all honesty one could barely tell my car was tinted. So again ya the tint was illegal, this thread was to find out if there was away to correct and not have to pay, not to say wether or not the cop had the right to give me a ticket or not.
