Buying a DSLR at this point is like me buying a guitar with 1 year prepaid lessons.
It's great if I put it to use, but will I? I'll find out in a few weeks/months.

You won't get poster size prints out of most P&S cameras due to limitations of the relatively small lenses, but you can certainly get beautiful pics that will more than fill your screen. It does help to have the Canon colors, though.

Plus, shooting in RAW > .jpeg. Give a pro a P&S and the pics should turn out nice; give the same pro an SLR and the pics will come out better. Colors will be more vibrant, images should be sharper (depending on the lens), yada yada yada.
SLR should give a little better dynamic range, quicker focus, more control of DOF, choise of lenses, etc. Images are typically NOT sharper, though. But that only means the SLRs typically do less processing in camera. This also means more post-processing, which may or may not be desirable to some.
To each his own, but I don't think anyone who is not a serious hobbyist or pro needs a digital SLR. The high-end P&S cameras have very good lenses and full manual control. There is plenty of quality and versatility to allow your creative juices to flow.
