I went to Sam's Club, bought a Kodak and "took it for a test drive". I liked it, returned it to Sam's Club and bought the same model online [for less] at another store.

www.dpreview.com is your friend. Go there, spend a few hours, and learn all you can. Avoid going to big box stores to learn info about cameras, because they all have no idea what they are talking about. Dpreview is the world's best camera website, hands down. Their reviews are a bit technical, but they are very concise and forthwright with information.

I myself am an amateur photographer and shoot with a Nikon D200 DSLR, but my small pocket cam is a Panasonic FX-01. Panasonic makes some really great small cameras, with sharp lenses and very high build quality. I would personally check out the Panasonic FX07. Its brand new, small, 7.2 Megapixels, and has a really great 28mm wide angle lens, which is very unusual for a camera of that size (most are around 35mm). Plus its around 300 dollars, so it should fit your budget nicely. Great battery life too.

Canon also makes some nice cameras as well. I would personally place them and Panasonic near the top in terms of build quality and performance.

I have a Canon S2 IS I bought it for around 300, you can probably get it for cheaper now, and they have a S3 IS thats 6 mp instead of 5 with the old S2 and it's selling around 300 now. Its not an SLR but it has alot of features a pretty large zoom and its not too expensive. It's a good amateur/starter camera before moving up to an SLR.

Hey man,
I used to be a senior at best buy digital imaging. Unlike alot of the tards that work there, I actually knew my **** man! Lets put it this way, you get what you pay for bro and if your looking for a kick *** camera for under 300 bucks then listean up.

Your best bid is to stick with a reliable brand with good build quality and most important is the lens. 2 brands come to mind for just that and they are Nikon and Canon! Don't believe me? Try consumer reports, but you can get a kick *** deal on a new Nikon right off of ebay dude.

One of my personal favorites is the Nikon 4300 4.3 megapixel camera. Yes I own one & it's an older model but this camera rocks till this day. You can add various lenses to it, it has lithium ion batteries(stay the F$%#! away from AA battery cameras) they do not last long at all and before you know it, your replacing batteries! It has tons of other features but its outdated! So check this one out,

http://cgi.ebay.com/NIKON-COOLPIX-S1...QQcmdZViewItem

not sure if you can add fish eye, wide angle lenses to it but then again as a beginner you probably won't. It has all the top notch **** that you need including anti shake and stuff like that but man this camera is sweet! It's a few pops above your budget but well worth it I say! If someone bided on it then look at his other items and you can see he has more than one.
It's a good deal IMHO! Best buy retails them for $399.99 plus tax.

Hope that helps!
Peace!

as an automotive photographer myself. i shoot with a Nikon D70 and used to shoot with a canon 20d as well...

i would reccomend either the digital rebel by canon, Nikon D70s, Nikon D50 or Canon 20D.... you can find them all pretty close in price depending on used or not.......

here's a shot i took with my D70:

Anthony perhaps you should re-read his post. His budget is 300 bucks, he's not ready for SLR and the cheapest d70 with the body and lens is over his budget and I would warn against buying a used one(one drop is all it takes, no seller will tell you if it was dropped).

Point is, even Anthony agrees that Canon and Nikon is what you should be looking at. A beginner like yourself, stick with a good point and shoot digital then work your way up to SLR digital man. Just read the reviews on the one I recommended for you and decide for yourself.
Peace!

You didn't mention what websites you found this camera at for 300$, but whichever one it was, go to this website, www.resellerratings.com , to see how that website is rated. I posted a similiar thread roughly 2 weeks ago ( https://my350z.com/forum/showthread....anon+rebel+xti ) and was given some great info on the websites selling the XTi for ~300$. That is the camera I am getting, but unfortuanatly it costs more than what those websites are selling. The cameras they have are "grey market" and do not have warranties, straps, batteries, etc... Research those websites if they are the same as the sites I posted in my thread and see for yourself. I really do not want to rain on your parade, but I do not want you to end up spending more than you should have either. Good Luck, and if you find a legit deal then let me know.

Here is a screen capture of the webiste I told you to look at detailing express cameras, after ~340 reviews the average rating is 0.92 out of 10. That site will call you the day after you buy the camera and do the old bait and switch scam. The product they are showing in the picture is not the same as what you would be ordering. Read the reviews that are on the page and see what others have gone through... Here is the direct link to the website: http://www.resellerratings.com/seller1805.html
