I picked up the Nikon D50 with (1) lens for $549 OTD. Very nice camera, I am highly impressed.
Depends on your budget, the sky's the limit. I forget, but there is a website for camera DSLR gurus.
Just remember, I believe none of them come with SD cards, so pick one up before you go out and think you have at least 10 shots or so without a SD card. I learned the hard way, lol! GL!

All my shots are taken with a Nikon D50. There are better cameras out there, but for a starter I think it's the best value. The Canon Rebel XT is also an excellent starter.
I am not sure about your size, but bigger hand folks tend to navigate towards the Nikon's while the smaller hand folks tend to like the Canon's.
Don't know if you want to admit whether or not you have small hands though....

Nikon or Canon.
Understand that if you get into the hobby your biggest investments will be in the glass (lens). You'll also have a pretty good investment in flash gear too. The nice thing is that you can go from a say, Nikon D-50 to a D-200 and keep all that other gear. Also unlike film cameras which had lifespands measured in decades a digital body is likely to be upgraded every 3-5 years. Normally Nikon and Canon will not change lens and flash mounts.

Canon S3 will make a good entry level camera for you. It has very good fetures that come on a SLR and more but it is also a point and shoot. For the price ($350), I couldn't pass it up. Here are some of the pics I have taken with it. The one of the cars are not edited with photoshop. I didn't use filters either.
