BTW, that's an expensive accident. I'm probably gonna pony up for the sister 70-200 f4 L IS.
Thanks for the review. I just got the EOS 400D (rebel xti) and was looking for more info on some good lens alternatives.
I haven't had time to play with it much (less than 30 minutes). Hopefully this weekend it won't be raining and I'll be able to get out and play with it a little.
I have yet to figure out why, but when I open the pictures in the gimp the colors are washed out/bland. When I open the default image in windows it looks fine. I can't find any settings in the options that would explain why this would happen(gamma/color correction). If I can't figure it out I guess I'll be going back to photoshop, ugh.
I had to do a little editing to get the colors back to the way they were....not quite the same but close enough for now:

Further refinements not available in DPP can be done with Photoshop or any other editor... or you can open the RAW file directly with Photoshop and do all your processing with it.
A setting in GIMP may be washing out your colors. You just need to find out which
