Default *** Canon 40D Thread ***

Just got mine today from Best Buy. Asked the chick that sold me the cam if there was a "body only" available. She said they'll only be offering the Kit (28-135mm IS) for awhile.

I can't wait to put it to it's paces.

I only held it for a minute at the store, and took 2 shots. Moving from the XTi, the viewfinder is definitely bigger, and the shutter is noticeably softer. After the 2 shots, I had to get it.

I'll post more "opinions from an XTi owner" later.

One more thing, need to part with my original 28-135mm. Let me know if you're interested before I put it up on eBay.

Don't tell me, you must be a Nikon guy wanting to buy the D300.

I keed, I keed. But I don't have $$$ for the full frame Canon.

I'm straight up Canon as well.

I'm just doing the loooong save for a 5D. But i'm keeping my 20D for the better FPS.

There is a coupon floating around the internet for Best Buy, it says it exclude DSLR's but some peolple claimed to have used the coupon.

Also Ritz camera, $1299 body only, no tax, no shipping. My camera shipped from Ritz last night.

Here is a pretty good early review.

how much do you want for your 28-135mm lens? Is it an IS lens also?

Why get rid of it? Use it as a backup or go "two-pistoled." You don't have to change your ultra wide and zoom all the time.

I'm seriously considering just keeping mine now.

Finally opened the box today. Shutter is not as muted as it was at the store, or I might be trippin'. It's actually kind of loud. I'll have to go back to Best Buy and try out the display.

Coming from an XTi user, I actually prefer the controls on the XTi... traditional SLR users may not. When they say that the adjustments are faster and easier on the prosumer models, really, it's just as easy on the XTi.

The LCD screen is bigger on the 40D, and I'm used to looking at the back LCD for the settings. Again, the LCD on top can actually be gotten rid of... pretty redundant. I think it's just there to appease the traditional old school users.

In the manual, it lists the EF-S 17-85 IS and EF-S 18-55 IS (the newest lens offering from Canon... reportedly, will only go for $200). I don't know if supplies were limited or Canon wanted to rush this out to market *ahem*... Nikon D300*, but yeah, the kit comes with the EF 28-135 IS.

I'll say this though, the noise at higher ISO's compared to an XTi is remarkable... a full one stop ISO better... or better!

The viewfinder is brighter... I can actually see detail in what I'm shooting now in low light. What a difference. I didn't know what people were talking about, but yeah, the XTi's viewfinder is small and dim compared to the 40D.

And for me, the biggest plus is the auto focus. Focuses on low light objects that the XTi cannot or will take awhile to lock. This was tested with the same lens at the same settings.

For me, the upgrade is worth it. It'll get shots that I was missing before, because of the auto focus.

Please don't hate me... do what I did and use your Best Buy Credit card and pay 0% interest for 12months. Just pay $150 per month for 10 months and you'd be happy.

A glowing review from Luminous Landscape... claiming IQ on par or slightly better than 5D! From a cropped sensor! Look all the way on the bottom of the page and you'll come across an ISO 800 pic that displays this camera's high ISO capabilities.

Finally got to play around with on today. Damn, the 40D is so much heavier than the XTi. I love it for the features, but I think the XTi might serve a better purpose for the simple mobility. I think I'm going to hold on to my XTi for now and maybe look to upgrade to the 40D in the much later future.

I can now understand the choice to keep the XTi as a backup.
WooHoo, no need to upgrade body = more lens shopping

Just wait til you go from the 40D to a 1D series or full frame body.
