Camera Talk
I have a big ol brick camera that takes awesome 3MP photoz (from about 6 yr ago). what's the point of anything higher res than that? 7 MP sounds ridiculous, especially when you want to print out 5x7 and stuff. anywhoo, I'm thinking about upgrading to the canon sd1000.
mp pixels dont really matter. it only comes into play when you want to print large. that camera should be perfect. i bought a leica dlux3 earlier this year and i use it more than my slr's. so yea.. unless you want to print out a mural of your ride and plaster it over one of your walls.. you should be good.

c'mon.. I know every single one of you's got a cam.. give some input about compact cams.. canon s850 and sd1000 is what I'm looking at..
If small pics is your thing then a ordinary point a shoot will do. But some of the "cheaper" camera don't really come out really well, even in 5x7 pics. The blue balance is not really good so pics will come out looking like you are under water.
I own a canon sd850is. I love it because it has 4x telephoto zoom and image stabilization. It takes great color pictures and has a bunch of other automatic and manual settings.
The more MP you have the more pixels you have to work with. The advantage is for large prints and also cropping images.
The bigger difference you will see is in the image processing, internal image processing has gone a long way in the terms of color accuracy, noise, facial recognition, exposure, et cetera.
From a quick look at the canon website, the sd1000 has digic III processing, which I have heard many good things about.
One thing that I would look for in a good camera is shutter lag, a spec manufacturers seldom publish... I like the camera to take the picture when I click the shutter, not after the moment has passed.

Just get a Canon A series, or a upper model Panasonic
Its worth considering a IS model, but avoid digital IS go for optical IS
MP #s are BS, every modern camera has more then you'll ever need
you dont need more then 4x zoom
I agree about the image processing, but all the new Canons have you covered
Search, I know I posted in 3 thread within this month asking the same question, others and me gave more advice including with models to consider

Ive always owned sonys. They are good enough for me. Im no pro. I have a SonyCyber shot 5.1mp 12x Zoom. Takes great pics. I also have a compact 7.2mp SOny cybershot with 3x zoom. Fits good in the pocket while the other one is much larger and requires bringing the case with you.
More MP is great if you need to enlarge prints or crop images. More MP will minimize aliasing or the need to interporlate when enlarging or cropping. If most of your pictures will only be seen on some type of monitor and rarely been seen on actual print, you really don't need that many MPs unless you do a lot of close in cropping. Lens quality and your image processor is more important than having high MPs.
