Default Brand new to SLR cameras, please help

Hello everyone I am extremely new to photography but I have found a deep interest in getting into it. As of now, all I have is a Sony Cybershot regular digital camera. It has gotten water damage (which now needs to get fixed) and I was looking at getting a new user friendly DSLR camera. I am looking into taking pictures from cars, to traveling, to family pictures. I have read many threads and it seems that the norm would be a choice between a Canon Digital Rebel EOS XT or a Nikon D40. I have also found that a 50mm 1.8 lense would be recommended. I guess you can call me a "Curious Novice" and have some worries. I would want to choose between a camera that is not so sensitive to water issues, not be so confusing where I would need to read the manual for 5 hours to use, has a decent size lcd screen and is not going to dig deep into the pockets. It seems that both the cameras I am comtemplating are around 500 which is as high as I would want to go. I also want a camera that I would not need/want to upgrade by next year. Something that will last for at least a few years. Some say Cannon is better others say Nikon. For my applications, which can you guys recommend, with what accessories and why? Thank you in advance

I've been very happy with my Canon XTi. However, if I could do it all over again, I would have considered the XT a little more. Just pick one and play with it. You'll figure it out.

There will always be the Nikon/Canon camps and both will say the other is worse. Either way, you'll have something to start with.

NIKON FTW
Get a used d70. D40 is very very user friendly.

bandhphoto.com, calumet photo, buydig.com to name a few. Just check around and be sure to check resellerratings.com before you order. The ones I gave you are very reputable dealers though.

Edit: just saw used. I would recommend craigslist and check the camera out before you buy it. Photography-on-the.net has some used XTs as well from senior members, wont find much nikon stuff on there though, it's a more canon based site.
